These productive waters are home to big Snook, Redfish, Trout, Sheepshead and all kinds of Snapper. Tarpon also inhabit these waters during the late spring and summer months. And when they're in town we highly recommend giving Tarpon fishing a shot! Boca Grande is home to many fish species, but there's no doubt which one rules the water when it comes to action and excitement. Tarpon are Florida's premier inshore gamefish for a reason, and there's no better place to catch one than here with Captain Chris! Captain Chris has dedicated most of his life to helping people catch Tarpon. Targeting the "Silver King" has been a family tradition for a long time, and Tarpon fishing runs in his blood. At the age of five, Chris caught his first Tarpon, weighing around 80 pounds, in the deep waters of Boca Grande Pass with his father Mark. Even before that, his mother Cynthia was fighting Tarpon in Boca Grande Pass while pregnant with him. Captain Chris uses traditional live bait methods for catching Tarpon on his fishing charters. The most common live baits used include Blue Crabs, Pass Crabs, Squirrelfish, and Jumbo Shrimp. Live baits are drifted along the bottom of the pass, as well as other water columns where Tarpon can be found, using a transducer bottom machine. This method requires constant adjustment of the line depth to keep the baits within the “strike zone”. The live baits are presented as naturally as possible by using extra long leaders, heavy lead weights, and constant maneuvering of the boat by the Captain. Using these methods, Captain Chris consistently gets his clients on the fish, and—although there are no guarantees in fishing—has a better than 90% success rate when it comes to his Tarpon trips. Captain Christopher operates out of a custom built 21’ Clearwater 2000CC bay boat, built to the Captain’s standards in 2019. This modern vessel allows for a comfortable drift and great manueverability. There’s a lot of fishing space and also shaded T-top for hot summer days. Though he loves running further from shore to bottom fish the reefs for grouper, snapper, and pelagic species, the weather conditions have to be pretty stellar to allow this kind of trip. Thus, aboard his 23' Parker, he spends a lot of time hammering the inshore with his clients, and there are no shortage of fish (and big ones at that!) to catch! Lush grass flats abound in this area. These shallow grass flats are full of crabs, shrimp, and baitfish which in turn attract the game fish. Snook, Speckled Trout, and Redfish are the most sought after species, but you can also expect to hook into Spanish Mackerel, Jack Crevalle, Flounder, Bluefish, Ladyfish, and others! Fishing the shallow flats requires patience and attention to detail. Fish are spooky in water that is only a couple of feet deep. The beauty of Captain Darius' 23' Parker is that it has a shallow enough draft to get you good shots up on the flats and in the back bays and inlets, while also having enough room and stability to haul it further offshore on a nice day! Boca Grande, FL is known as “The Tarpon Capital of the World”, and it certainly lives up to its name as it is one the most renowned Tarpon fishing destinations in the world! You may ask, “What makes tarpon fishing so good?” Well, annually tens of thousands of hungry tarpon migrate to Boca Grande pass and its surrounding areas for their annual spawn. They usually show up in early April, hungry after a long journey and want to fatten up. Now this incredible migration happens all over the Gulf of Mexico and along the Atlantic coast as well, but in most areas, the Tarpon are on the move. Boca Grande is different mainly due to Boca Grande Pass. This small inlet between Gasparilla Island and Cayo Costa is the deepest natural inlet on the Gulf of Mexico, reaching depths of approximately 80 feet. Tens of thousands of tarpon congregate in the area from April through August, feeding day and night, as they prepare to head back offshore for their annual spawning ritual. There are very few other places in the world where this many Tarpon congregate in one place and are actually happily eating! After weeks of feeding, they begin to gather into large breed schools to socialize as they prepare for this spawning ritual. They gather in huge schools that are sometimes 500 fish or more, giving anglers ample opportunities. After the spawn is over in early July most of the fish stay in the area to feed on the abundance of food the surrounding water has to offer. Great Tarpon fishing action will continue thru October offering anglers a chance at battling the “Silver King” for over 6 months out of the year!
