What Are Panfish?

Do you love spending time outdoors fishing? If so, panfish are a great target species to pursue. Panfish are a group of fish that taste delicious and fit inside a frying pan. It’s not the most scientific terminology, but that generalized term includes species like perch, crappie, bluegill, and other similar fish. Panfish are small, fun to catch, and tasty. They can be found in many different types of water, from small streams and ponds to larger lakes and reservoirs. Many anglers start by catching panfish before chasing bigger and more glorious prey, but forget how fun the small guys are to catch!

Tips for Catching Panfish

Panfish are a great target species to pursue because they can be found in many different types of water. In addition, panfish are a delicious table fare fish! The best techniques and bait to use when targeting panfish vary depending on the type of water you're fishing in. For example, if you're fishing in a small stream, using a small hook and light line with live bait is often the most effective way to catch panfish. However, if you're fishing in a larger lake or reservoir, using artificial lures such as crankbaits or jigs can be more effective. Panfish can be caught pretty much anywhere. Whether you are fishing from the shore of your local lake or the deck of a charter, panfish are usually in abundance.

Panfish generally feed in shallow depths, so a heavy weight on your line is not necessary. On sunny days with clear waters, you can sometimes see these tasty treats from the surface. Then you have the opportunity to practice sight casting and toss a light line right next to your target. They can also be caught using a fly rod, which some people prefer as opposed to a classic spinning reel. When it comes to panfish, it’s all about having fun. Anything goes!

No matter what type of water you're fishing in, one of the most important things to remember when targeting panfish is to use the lightest tackle possible. This will help you avoid spooking the fish and increase your chances of landing them. In general, panfish are not very large, so using light tackle is often all that's necessary to successfully catch them. A light tackle also sets you up for a little more excitement in your battle on the line.

And remember, panfish are not very picky. They will often bite on just about anything! Minnows and worms work very well, as do small spinners and jigs. Try to find some manner of underwater vegetation, since panfish are often found in the weeds. Drop your bait near the vegetation and reel in very slowly. You don’t need a quick jig, but be ready for a battle when you get a bite. Panfish are small but often feisty!
