The Pacific coast of Guatemala features some of the world’s calmest and most consistent billfishing waters. Puerto Quetzal in particular is known as one of the best Sailfishing locations in the world, where anglers can get 15 to 20 bites a day and up to 40 bites a day during peak season between October and June. The top boats catch and release over 2,000 Sailfish a year! While Sailfishing is the main attraction, in these waters you can also reel in some massive Tuna and Marlin. If you're looking to break a personal record, this trip is for you!
On this trip you'll be fishing an area called the “Pocket”, a deep underwater canyon that is roughly 30 nautical miles wide. Most days, Captain Ozzy will start you just 12 to 15 miles offshore, on the tip of the canyon, but he may run you as far as 40 miles out if that’s what it takes to put you on the fish. Once out on the water, you'll be going for Sailfish, Blue Marlin, Striped Marlin, Black Marlin and more. 300 to 600 pounds is average for these massive Blue Marlin in this area! In recent years, it has not been uncommon for the best captains to raise four or more marlin in a day! Marlin can be caught year round in Guatemala, and are especially good to fish for in September through December.
You'll be targeting these fish using various methods including light tackle, heavy tackle, bottom fishing, trolling and jigging. Whatever fish you want to go after, Captain Ozzy will get you set up with the best method! You can even choose to fly fish if you wish. For billfish, expect to use artificial teasers and naked rigged natural bait such as ballyhoo. Quality is ensured with Shimano 20 to 50 pound class stand-up tackle. Guatemala is a world leader in conservation and all bait is rigged with circle hooks. All billfishing is Catch and Release Only, ensuring this fishing “hot spot” remains the angler’s choice destination for many years to come.
With the "Luxury Package," Captain Ozzy will take up to 5 anglers to the offshore waters in either his 40’ Luhrs Flybridge, 35ft Luhrs Flybridge with cruising speed of 24 knots, or his 35ft Viking-Open Flybridge powered by Twin Cat’s 420 HP engines with a cruising speed of 26 knots. I organized 13 anglers for 3 days of fishing through Ozzy with Pacific Fins and it could not have been any easier. The reservation and payment process was easy. A large van met us at the airport with a cooler of beer and whisked us away to the coast. On ...Read More arrival we were met with smiling faces and frozen drinks. The grounds are beautiful. Tropical birds, nice pool, docks over the lagoon. You can hear the ocean but cannot see it. There is a barrier island that separates the lagoon from the ocean. Pretty sunrise and sunset from the docks. We had 3 two-bedroom suites with a total of 4 queen beds in each plus one single queen room. The accommodations were very nice. TVs, mini-fridge with water, spacious bedrooms, A/C, decks, and so on. Very few mosquitoes and spray was provided from the bar. On one side of the pool is a large bar area and the other side is the dining area. Cook-to-order breakfast. Dinners were outstanding. Boats were also very good. Express style for the most part. I fished from all three of our boats over the three days. All captains were very skilled in finding fish and maneuvering the boats. Mates worked hard and let us do or not depending on what we wanted. They are fine with hooking the fish and then letting you fight it or you can try your hand at hooking one up from the teaser. One of our guys even learned how to "wire" in a sail once it got close to the boat. Over 3 days and 3 boats we released 117 sailfish in the 80# to 120# range and one Blue Marlin of about 300#. Brought in 25 or so large Mahi as well. Epic trip and both Ozzy and Joel made it fun and easy.
