About Your Guide

Fly fishing Tennessee is done best with Captain Jared DeRight of Southern Pines Guide Service. Captain Jared, a USCG licensed Captain, grew up fishing the farm ponds, streams, and lakes of the Midwest. As his young fishing career expanded, he trained for Largemouth Bass fishing tournaments and gained sponsorships from many industry-leading tackle and gear companies after winning youth casting competitions.

After relocating to the Southeast in the mid-2000's and becoming a fishing guide, Captain Jared took a break in 2008 to serve our country in the United States Marine Corps. After returning to the Southeast and fly fishing for the first time on the Hiwassee River of East Tennessee, he was hooked on the sport. He attended every fly fishing class and seminar he could find, and embraced the inevitable by enrolling in the Sweetwater Guide School in 2017.

From there, Captain Jared founded Southern Pines Guide Service on the Elk and Duck Rivers near Monteagle, Tennessee. These waters offer fantastic fly fishing, and it's not uncommon to catch over 40 Rainbow Trout and Brook Trout in a day on the water with Captain Jared.

Southern Pines Guide Service takes Southern Hospitality seriously. While quality rods, reels, tackle, and flies are included, their team goes above and beyond to include freshly grilled stream-side lunches atop a table-clothed foldable lunch table.

Had the chance to get out with captain Jared this June for our first ever guided float of the Elk. I absolutely could not recommend a trip with this guy any more. We had a wonderful time, tried some new techniques, had an amazing shore lunch of grilled steak and ended up with about 60 fish brought to the boat. We will be making this an annual trip for sure.

Had a chance to go on a float trip with Captain Jared this past weekend. It was by far the best fly fishing trip I’ve had. We boated around 60 fish. And had a awesome lunch. Captain Jared gave a ton of tips and tricks on fly fishing. I will definitely be going again with him. Great guide and a great trip.

Our trip down the Elk River with Jared was awesome! He's a very knowledgeable guide who knows the river like the back of his hand. I appreciated that he skipped the dead areas and spent extra time on his honey holes. He's definitely knows what works on this river, starting us out on some euro nymph rigs and moving into some dry-droppers. He even pulled the boat up onto a shoal and cooked us a shore lunch with fresh steak, a baked potato and a salad. We caught browns, bows and even a couple of brookies. This guy will get you on some fish regardless of your skill level!
