About Your Guide

John Shank of Lone Star Fly Fishing offers breathtaking trips along the Guadalupe River for Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, and more. John loves fly fishing the Guadalupe River of the Texas Hill Country, but grew up fishing with conventional tackle along the Texas coast.

He tried fly fishing at age 12 and never looked back after landing a 22" Brown Trout on his very first cast. Nearly 20 years later, John thanks fly fishing for introducing him to beautiful places and people, and impacting his life for the better.

John loves exploring the Guadalupe River and sharing all that it offers, including hungry Rainbow Trout and Brown Trout, with expert and beginner fly anglers alike.

Lone Star Fly Fishing provides high-quality rods and reels, tackle and flies, for every trip. Drift boat trips are most popular, but John and Kelli also offer Guadalupe wading trips, as well as Canyon Lake fly fishing trips for Stripers.

Be sure to purchase your Texas fishing license online ahead of your trip, and all full-days come with a packed lunch!

John is a very knowledgeable guide and went above and beyond to teach me how to fly fish for trout on the Guadalupe River, we caught close to 30 rainbow trout on our trip and lost countless more! Using captain also made the process booking a guide extremely convenient and stress free.

Best guide experience on the Guad! Had a great time fishing and learned a lot. John was so patient with me a novice and even better with my son who knows how to fly fish and cast. But no one knows the River like John. Check him out and book a trip! We’ll be back for sure.

Fishing with John was an awesome experience. The float trip down the Guadalupe is a must. John's experience guiding will put you on fish, even when the river is crowded on the weekends. Looking forward to doing it again. Thanks again John. Tight Lines Jeff & Sandra

John knows his stuff. He shared his knowledge and gave appropriate guidance to get me hooked up. It didn’t take me long to learn it and I put John to work on the net and camera! Lost count on how many fish we caught/released. 🎣🎣👍🏼👍🏼
