trip description for Carp and Buffalo on the Fly in Austin

If you've ever wanted to nail big Carp on tiny dry flies, this trip is for you! Although when many fly anglers think "fly fishing", they're picturing Trout somewhere in the Rocky Mountains, Riley specializes in finding and hooking lowland species such as Carp and Bass. Catching a carp on the fly is hard at first, which is why your guide loves them, and he would love it even more if he could help you get on one yourself! When you go out with one of the guides to chase these feisty specimens you can expect to spend your day wading around lakes and river systems stalking your quarry stealthy and precisely. These fish are very aware of their surroundings, and you get no second chances. It’s either a perfect cast and presentation or the fish spooks, and often, the latter. When they do eat, however, you’re can bet your bottom dollar they're going to take you out to the backing! Certain times of the year, you can also target smallmouth buffalo on the fly, which grow even larger than carp, and are actually indigenous to Texas waters. Teaching trips are also welcomed for folks that have never held a fly rod. If this trip is more in line with your skill level, you can expect it to be more centered around the fundamentals, rather than finding and catching a fish, but it won't be too long before your out to the backing on a giant carp as well! What are the most popular months to fish in Liberty Hill?

Fishing seasons in Liberty Hill, Texas, follow a rhythm dictated by the changing weather patterns and the behavior of the local fish species. Spring marks the beginning of the prime fishing season, as warming temperatures trigger the spawning activities of various freshwater fish. Anglers eagerly anticipate the spring months as they offer optimal conditions for targeting bass, crappie, and catfish in the region's rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. As the days grow longer and the water temperatures rise, fish become more active, making it an excellent time to cast your line and reel in some prized catches.

Summer in Liberty Hill brings both opportunities and challenges for fishing enthusiasts. While the warmer weather encourages fish to feed more aggressively, the intense heat can also lead to decreased oxygen levels in the water, particularly in shallow areas. Anglers often find success by fishing during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening, when fish are more active. Additionally, targeting deeper waters or shaded areas can increase your chances of hooking a bite during the summer months. As fall approaches, fishing in Liberty Hill enters a transition period marked by fluctuating temperatures and changing fish behavior. While the early weeks of fall can still provide productive fishing opportunities, especially for bass and crappie, anglers must adapt their strategies to match the shifting conditions. Cooler temperatures gradually lower water temperatures, prompting fish to move to deeper waters in search of warmer environments. However, as the foliage begins to change and the days grow shorter, fall offers a scenic backdrop for casting your line amidst the vibrant colors of the Texas Hill Country. By adjusting your tactics to match the seasonal changes, fishing in Liberty Hill remains an enjoyable pursuit year-round.

We had a great experience with Captain Kevin. He has a great rig, great personality and put us on enough Large Mouth to please me. I took my 10 year old son because he said he wanted to catch a large mouth. Kevin came through with an extra life jacket too (I forgot one for my son). One hiccup was we were going to meet at different lake but they closed it due to the horrible drought we are in. Kevin audibled and we meet at Lake Bastrop which was more convenient for me anyway. I would definitely recommend this easy to use app and would definitely hire Captain Kevin again. He had everything we needed and got us catching fish quickly. He is really good with kids too!

Kevin was awesome and so was his boat

My experience was wonderful with Captain Kevin! He texted a couple days before the trip to ask if we could head out earlier than our scheduled time due to the heat and go try to beat the weekend rush of recreational boaters. So I met him at the boat ramp, which was very easy to find, at 6:15 and we headed out. The first place we fished was where we caught the biggest fish, pictured below, in the first 20 minutes of fishing. Things were a little slow the rest of the day, but we caught probably around a dozen fish, targeting and catching a variety of different species. . Captain Kevin was extremely friendly, and knows more about fishing than just about anybody I’ve met. He knew I’m a beginner, and was very kind and patient in teaching me and explaining everything to me. We swapped stories, got to know each other, and had the most wonderful time. I would highly recommend fishing with Captain Kevin.

Grant was a very pleasant and helpful guide for my daughter and me. Fishing was slow, on a very hot day. We both caught some nice bass, despite being on the river with several hundred July 4th weekend kayakers and paddleboaters, as well a bat watchers under the bridges. Grant is very knowledgeable and great fun to fish with. Highly recommend.

We had an amazing time out on Lake Travis with our guide Captain Aaron. Aaron reached out to us before our trip to check in and answer any questions we had. He provided great directions to the floating dock to meet him. We had a super fun morning out on the lake fishing for Bass. We got to try several different Rod & Reel combos, and various spots on Lake Travis. At the end of our trip he gave us a tour of Lake Travis! We will definitely book with Captain Aaron again.

Jake brought my brothers and me out onto Lake Travis for Guadalupe Bass. Jake put all of us onto Guads and multiple other species as well. Jake was great with explaining everything he did and how to best use different techniques for catching fish. He was also incredibly friendly and personable and was hands down the best guide I’ve ever been on. This was honestly one of the funnest days of fishing I’ve ever had, and it definitely was for my brothers as well! I will probably make another trip with my brothers in the future with Jake for another great day! I highly recommend Jake to anglers of any experience who want to get on some nice fish and just have a great time! Thanks again for a great time, Jake! Hopefully we’ll get back out there with you again!
