Cold temperatures have gifted us an early start to the hard-water season here in Maine. I’ve been fishing through the ice for about three weeks now, focusing mostly on smaller ponds that locked up first. My clients and I have had some great days jigging crappie, along with steady action from pickerel, largemouth bass, and brook trout. With January 1st marking our traditional opener, many of the larger lakes should be ready to go, opening up opportunities for trout, salmon, and pike. We’re feeling very fortunate with the ice conditions this year and are super pumped for what’s shaping up to be an excellent hard-water season.
