• What are pelagic fish?

Pelagic fish are species that live in the open ocean or the water column, away from the ocean floor. They include two main groups: coastal pelagic fish found near shore, like sardines and mackerel, and oceanic pelagic fish, which live in deeper waters away from the coastline, such as tuna and marlin. These fish play vital roles in marine ecosystems, forming the base of the food chain and supporting valuable fisheries. Due to their migratory behavior and wide distribution, they are targeted by various fishing techniques. However, overfishing and habitat degradation threaten their populations, highlighting the need for sustainable management and conservation efforts.
