Walking the dog in fishing refers to a technique used with topwater stick baits, such as the Rapala Skitter Walk or River2Sea Rover, to imitate the movements of a dying baitfish. This technique is particularly effective for attracting largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass, as these species are predisposed to feed up and are attracted to the commotion caused by a topwater bait mimicking a dying baitfish. This technique requires a bit more effort than just casting and letting the bait drift naturally. However, the reward is the potential for exciting strikes, as the walking bait can attract the attention of feeding fish.
