About Your Trip
If you're looking for a true Pacific Northwest fishing adventure, it doesn't get better than chasing Steelhead with Captain Jim. With decades of experience guiding Oregon’s iconic rivers, Captain Jim has built a reputation for going all-in on every trip—reading the water like a book, dialing in the perfect setup for the conditions, and making sure you're in the right place at the right time to hook into these incredible fish. Whether you're a seasoned
angler or brand new to the Steelhead game, a day on the river with Captain Jim is equal parts education, excitement, and hard-hitting action.
Steelhead are legendary in Oregon—and for good reason. These ocean-run Rainbow Trout average 6 to 10 pounds but can tip the scales at over 15. They’re sleek, aggressive, and pure muscle. Hook into one, and you’re in for screaming reels, acrobatic leaps, and a battle that’ll leave your arms burning and your heart pumping. Landing one isn’t a guarantee—Steelhead are notorious for tossing hooks mid-air—but that’s exactly what makes every hookup unforgettable.
Depending on the season, you'll be fishing for either Winter Steelhead (November–March) or Summer Steelhead (May–September), targeting prime runs on rivers like the Alsea, McKenzie, Rogue, Umpqua, and Willamette. These rivers are as scenic as they are productive, winding through Oregon’s lush forests and dramatic foothills, offering the perfect backdrop for an all-day river adventure.
Captain Jim’s trips typically run 6.5 to 8.5 hours, giving you a full day to cover water, switch up techniques, and take in the rhythm of the river. You might be drifting through riffles, working tailouts, or targeting deep runs—whatever the fish are doing, Jim knows how to adjust and get results. He'll outfit you with the right rod-and-reel combo for Steelhead (expect a bit more backbone than your average trout rig), and walk you through everything from rigging to casting to landing your fish like a pro.
Beyond the bite, Steelhead are prized for their table fare—firm red meat with a flavor that strikes the perfect balance between Trout and Salmon. And at the end of your trip, Jim will clean and bag your catch so it's ready for the grill, smoker, or freezer.
Be sure to bring along:
Weather-appropriate gear (Oregon can throw it all at you in one day)
Soft-soled shoes for comfort in the boat or on the riverbank
Sunscreen, snacks, and drinks
Binoculars if you're into birdwatching—you might spot Bald Eagles, Ospreys, or even river otters!
A camera—you’ll want proof of that trophy Steelhead (or at least the one that got away)
Captain Jim’s passion, know-how, and tireless work ethic make every trip feel like more than just fishing—it’s a full-on immersion into the rivers of Oregon and the incredible fish that call them home. Book your trip, ask questions, and get ready for an unforgettable Steelhead experience.
