Captain Matt has been a licensed US Coast Guard Captain since 2011. Born and raised in California, Matt has loved fishing since childhood. Learning how to fish in freshwater lakes and streams in the Sierra Nevada Mountains quickly turned to an obsession with targeting larger gamefish in the Pacific. Beyond being a fisherman, Matt is a all-around waterman: He's swum the 21-mile Catalina Channel, worked six years as a local ocean lifeguard, surfed every chance he can get, and coached a local high school water polo team for eight years. He's eager to share his passion for the local fishery and its waters!

On this full-day fishing adventure, you'll target big-time California sportfish species, including Tuna, Mahi, and more! This fishery, off the coast of Newport Beach, CA, is one of the most productive in California, attracting pelagic predators who come to feast on baitfish, squid and more. On this trip, Captain Matt will take you deep offshore to find the best areas for Bluefin and Yellowfin Tuna. If you're an offshore angler who has yet to feel the power of a Pacific Bluefin Tuna, this trip has your name on it! Bluefin are famous worldwide for their speed, power, endurance, and fighting ability, with huge dives and long runs that will test any fisherman. When it comes to finding and hooking these big-time sportfish, Captain Matt is your man. To locate these fish—which can be found anywhere from ten to fifty miles offshore—Captain Matt watches for birds, which follow schools of baitfish; he also looks for "foaming" at the surface, which indicates Tuna feeding; and communicates with other boats to zero in on the fish. When hunting these fish, you'll use techniques including trolling, drifting, and casting right into the school! Depending on the season, weather, and your fishing preferences, Captain Matt will make sure that you're equipped with the right gear and tackle to get the job done. On this full-day fishing adventure, you'll head offshore towards the San Clemente Islands, a narrow outcrop that's home to millions of migratory birds and tons of sea life. The fishery here is one of the most productive in California, attracting pelagic predators such as Tuna as well as nearshore species such as Barracuda, Yellowtail Amberjack, Rockfish, and more. Cold currents from the Pacific run right up against the cliffs here, creating a perfect environment for major sportfish. On this trip, Captain Matt will take you offshore where you can target pelagic species such as Bluefin and Yellowfin Tuna, White Seabass, and Yellowtail. The season will determine the fish you target, but all of these fish are amazing fighters and some of the best-eating fish anywhere in the ocean. On this trip, you'll primarily be trolling, using multiple baits and lures to attract these fast, aggressive fish. You will be using top-of-the-line gear, artificial lures, and hand-rigged bait. When a big Bluefin hits that hook, you'll know it! Tuna are some of the hardest-fighting fish in the sea, and they'll test your strength, stamina, and fishing skill, so be ready. Naturally, you'll use different techniques to target these species, including trolling, bottomfishing, trolling, and jigging to pick up bites! My husband and I went out with captain Matt this morning. The communication prior to the trip was great. We knew exactly what we needed to bring and where to meet. We showed up and got right on the boat to head out. Matt was super friendly and knowledgable. He got us all set up when we got to the first spot and let us go for it once we were ready. We helped cast if needed hut really was there to let us fully experience the fishing trip and give us tips. We caught about 25 fish (calico bass & barracuda) and had a great time out on the water. We will definitely be back again and highly suggested the trip to friends in the area!

Great trip with Captain Matt, the big fish weren’t biting but we found a great run for several hours on Calicos and Cudas with a couple nice Sheepshead. Really enjoyed the service and assistance from Matt, it was a pleasure to spend the day with him and his boat. We will join him again, hopefully soon.
