About Your Guide

Dave Korsch

Independent Guide
I grew up in the Vancouver area and became an avid saltwater angler as a kid in the 70's. As I grew into my teens this love of fishing continued to grow, and I began pursuing Salmon on a regular basis from slightly larger boats whenever I had a day or weekend free. While going through University (Faculty of Forestry, Resource Management - Fisheries and Hydrology) I took a summer job as a fishing guide in West Vancouver and have been guiding anglers ever since. In 1990 I purchased my first boat, started my business, and began running charters on a year-round basis for the first time. The main reason I am still guiding is that even after all these years I still would rather be out fishing on a charter than have a day off work. I still enjoy guiding as much as I did when I started more than three decades ago. Meeting new clients and especially reacquainting with repeat clients from previous years is what makes the job particularly enjoyable. In June 2025 I moved my charter...

About Your Trip

Spend a day fishing the productive waters around Gabriola Island and the lower Strait of Georgia with Captain David, a knowledgeable local guide who knows exactly where to find fish in this unique coastal fishery. With most fishing grounds located less than 15 minutes from the marina, you’ll spend more time with lines in the water and less time running between spots.

These trips primarily focus on salmon fishing, targeting species such as Chinook (King)
Salmon and Coho Salmon, with seasonal opportunities for Sockeye, Pink, and Chum Salmon as they move through the area. Depending on conditions and your preferences, there may also be opportunities to target Lingcod and Rockfish, and during open seasons the crew can deploy prawn and shrimp traps for delicious local spot prawns.

The most common technique used is trolling with downriggers, a proven method for presenting baits and lures at the precise depths where salmon are feeding. Captain David often prefers trolling plugs without bulky flashers, which many anglers appreciate because it allows for a more direct and exciting fight once a salmon is hooked. At times, light tackle jigging can also be effective for species like Coho, Lingcod, and Rockfish.

You’ll fish aboard a 25’ Mako walkaround, a versatile and comfortable fishing platform that accommodates up to four guests. The boat is equipped with GPS, fishfinder, an ice box, and a marine toilet, along with all the gear needed for a productive day on the water.

All rods, reels, tackle, bait, and fuel are included in the trip price, so you can arrive ready to fish. Captain David runs the boat himself without a mate, giving guests a more personal, hands-on experience throughout the trip.

While the 4-hour minimum charter is enough time to explore several nearby fishing spots, longer trips are recommended if you’d like to spend more time targeting multiple species such as salmon and lingcod in the same outing.

Before your trip, anglers will need to purchase a valid British Columbia fishing license and any required species tags. Guests should also bring sunglasses, bottled water, and non-spray sunscreen to stay comfortable during the day. Additional drinks are welcome onboard.

With short travel times, productive waters, and a captain who knows the area inside and out, Captain David’s trips offer a fantastic way to experience salmon fishing in the Strait of Georgia near Gabriola Island.
