Exploring The Louisiana Marsh

Fishing in Belle Chasse

Fishing in Belle Chasse
trip description for Fly Fishing Venice, LA in Belle Chasse

The combination of seemingly unlimited fish and miles and miles of shallow water make coastal Louisiana one of the best-kept secrets in the fly-fishing world. If you haven't heard about Louisiana fly-fishing, it's probably because people want to keep it all to themselves! On this trip, you'll be going after classic inshore species such as Jack Crevalle, Redfish, and Speckled Trout—all on the fly! As with any fly-fishing trip, you will catch slightly fewer fish than you might catch on conventional tackle; however, double hook-ups are basically a certainty on every Louisiana charter trip. On a good day, you can expect to catch 5-10 fish per angler, and on an exceptional day the numbers can reach 20 fish per angler or more. There are also plenty of Black Drum and Sheepshead, both of which will readily take a fly. You'll be out there on Captain Shane's 22' BlackJack center console, which is ideal for fishing the inshore flats, marshes, and shallows. Although he can provide fly rods and reels, it's preferable if you can bring your own so that you can work with the gear you have the most practice with! Shane recommends 8-9 wt. rods and drag-equipped reels with weight-forward floating line and the capacity to hold at least 60 yards of 20 lb. backing. This particular rod and reel combination will allow you to accurately cast a variety of saltwater flies in varying wind conditions and will also allow you to absorb the line stripping run that many of these fish will make when you set the hook. It is also a good idea to bring along a 10 wt. rod and reel combination. The 10 wt. will do a better job handling big (20-30 lb.) redfish or some of the other bigger species such as jack crevalle. trip description for Lake Pontchartrain Gar Trip in Mandeville

On this trip, you will target the Lake Pontchartrain Kraken, a mythical monster that has been snapping fisherman’s rods and steel leaders around the Lake! If you can't manage to hook the beast, you'll still be able to go after trophy Alligator Gar, Bull Reds, and the infamous Lake Pontchartrain Bull Sharks! These species are a blast to catch, and they can open up a serious can when hooked. Captain Mack will take you to the best fishing holes and feeding grounds on the Lake, and make sure you have the best possible gear and tackle to hook up some monsters! This trip is typically "CPR" (Catch, Photo, Release). If you want to keep fish, let your captain know and he can make sure to find some slot fish. Get out there and have a blast! Read More

Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Working with experienced fishing guides who know the best local spots and techniques can dramatically increase your odds of a great day. Having someone who is on the water every day and knows the area like the back of their hand is going to give you the best chances of success.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

Even if you’ve got a great setup already in your home waters, booking a guide also provides a great opportunity to experience new techniques, new locations, or even a chance at a new target species to knock off the bucket list.

Capt James was great. Knows his way around the water was able to bring us right to the fish everytime. Definitely would recommend. Can’t wait to come out again.

James is a true captain that has the fisherman in mind at all times. First he knows the area and is safe. He worked hard to get us on fish and we tried several areas before we were successful. He found the fish though and then we stayed to get some in the box. I have been on many fishing trips and James is at the top of my list. He is personable and cares about his clients. If your looking for a quality experienced Captain look no farther than James.

Mackie is very knowledgeable about the lake and has great patience. Within minutes after stopping I had a 20" redfish and Eddie had one hooked in the front of the boat. While we were reeling in, Kenny started fighting a 28"er!!
