Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

What is cobia fishing in Saint Bernard all about?

In Saint Bernard, Louisiana, cobia are a highly prized and sought-after species among anglers due to their powerful fighting abilities and delicious flesh. Also known as ling or lemonfish, cobia inhabit the nearshore and offshore waters of the Gulf of Mexico, particularly during their annual migration along the coast. These large, predatory fish are known for their distinctive appearance, with a flattened head, elongated body, and dark lateral stripe running the length of their body. Cobia are opportunistic feeders, preying on a variety of marine species such as baitfish, crustaceans, and squid, making them an exciting target for anglers.

One effective technique for targeting cobia in Saint Bernard is sight fishing, particularly during their migration along the coast in the spring and early summer months. Anglers often spot cobia swimming near the surface or following larger marine creatures such as manta rays, turtles, or sharks. Once spotted, anglers can cast live bait or artificial lures to entice strikes from these opportunistic predators. Sight fishing for cobia requires patience, keen observation skills, and precise casting to accurately present bait or lures to the fish.

Another successful technique for catching cobia in Saint Bernard is trolling with live bait or artificial lures along nearshore reefs, wrecks, or other structure-rich areas. Anglers troll at varying speeds and depths to cover a large area and locate actively feeding fish. Cobia are known to congregate around structure such as oil rigs, buoys, and navigation markers, where they feed on baitfish and other prey. By trolling with rigged baits or diving plugs, anglers can effectively target cobia and enjoy exciting battles as these powerful fish put their strength and agility to the test. Whether sight fishing or trolling, cobia fishing in Saint Bernard offers anglers an exhilarating and rewarding experience on the water.

What are the most popular months to fish for cobia fishing in Saint Bernard?

In Saint Bernard, Louisiana, cobia seasons typically coincide with their annual migration patterns along the Gulf Coast, providing anglers with prime opportunities to target these prized fish. The cobia migration usually occurs during the spring and early summer months, with peak activity observed from March through June. During this time, cobia move along the nearshore and offshore waters of the Gulf of Mexico, following warmer currents and congregating around structure-rich areas such as reefs, wrecks, and oil platforms. Anglers eagerly anticipate the arrival of cobia season, as it marks the beginning of exciting fishing opportunities in Saint Bernard's coastal waters.

Spring is often regarded as the best time to target cobia in Saint Bernard, as water temperatures begin to rise and cobia migrate northward along the coast. As the weather warms up and marine life becomes more active, cobia become more prevalent and easier to locate. Anglers can expect increased chances of encountering cobia during this time, whether sight fishing nearshore or trolling offshore. The spring season offers anglers favorable conditions and prime fishing opportunities to target cobia and enjoy thrilling battles with these powerful and elusive fish.

While the spring months are considered the peak of cobia season in Saint Bernard, anglers may also encounter cobia during other times of the year, depending on local conditions and migration patterns. Cobia fishing opportunities may extend into the summer months, particularly in offshore waters, as cobia continue their migration along the Gulf Coast. However, anglers should remain flexible and adaptable to changing conditions and adjust their fishing tactics accordingly. By staying informed about cobia migration patterns and seasonal trends, anglers in Saint Bernard can maximize their chances of success and enjoy memorable fishing experiences throughout the cobia season.

What techniques are popular for catching cobia in Saint Bernard?

In Saint Bernard, Louisiana, anglers utilize a variety of effective techniques to target cobia, taking advantage of their aggressive feeding behavior and migratory patterns along the Gulf Coast. One popular technique for catching cobia is sight fishing, particularly during their spring migration along the coast. Anglers often scan the surface of the water for signs of cobia, such as large shadows, dorsal fins, or tailing fish. Once spotted, anglers can cast live bait or artificial lures to entice strikes from these opportunistic predators. Sight fishing for cobia requires patience, keen observation skills, and precise casting to accurately present bait or lures to the fish.

Trolling is another successful technique for targeting cobia in Saint Bernard's coastal waters. Anglers troll along nearshore reefs, wrecks, or other structure-rich areas using live bait or artificial lures to cover a large area and locate actively feeding fish.

Another productive method for catching cobia in Saint Bernard is bottom fishing with live bait or jigging with artificial lures around offshore structures such as reefs, wrecks, and oil platforms. Anglers rig live baitfish, such as mullet or pinfish, on heavy tackle and drop them to the bottom, where cobia are known to feed. Vertical jigging with large, shiny jigs or bucktail jigs can also be effective for enticing strikes from cobia holding near the bottom. Whether sight fishing, trolling, or bottom fishing, Saint Bernard offers anglers a variety of techniques for targeting cobia and enjoying successful fishing trips in its diverse coastal waters.

What other species are popular in Saint Bernard?

In addition to cobia, Saint Bernard, Louisiana, offers anglers the opportunity to target a diverse range of species inhabiting its coastal waters. One popular target species is the redfish, also known as red drum, which is prized for its aggressive strikes and fighting abilities. Redfish can be found in marshy areas, estuaries, and along shallow flats, where they feed on crustaceans, baitfish, and other prey. Anglers target redfish using a variety of techniques, including casting with live bait, artificial lures, or fly fishing, making for exciting encounters on the water.

Another sought-after species in Saint Bernard is the speckled trout, also known as spotted sea trout. Speckled trout are commonly found in shallow bays, estuaries, and along grassy shorelines, where they feed on small baitfish and shrimp. Anglers target speckled trout using techniques such as drift fishing with live bait, casting with artificial lures, or fly fishing with streamers or poppers. Speckled trout are prized for their delicious flesh and are a popular target for both recreational and commercial fishermen in Saint Bernard.

In addition to redfish and speckled trout, anglers in Saint Bernard can target species such as flounder, sheepshead, black drum, and tripletail, among others. Flounder, with their flat bodies and camouflaging coloration, are often found lying on sandy bottoms or near structure, where they ambush passing prey. Sheepshead, known for their distinctive teeth and striped patterns, inhabit areas with structure such as docks, piers, and rock piles, where they feed on crustaceans and mollusks. Black drum and tripletail offer anglers additional opportunities for exciting fishing experiences in Saint Bernard's diverse coastal waters. Whether targeting cobia, redfish, speckled trout, or other species, Saint Bernard provides anglers with ample opportunities to enjoy memorable fishing trips and reel in impressive catches throughout the year.

Captain Chad took my wife and I out for a four hour inshore fishing trip around the Biloxi Bay. We had a great time, and caught a variety of species. Chad is a very knowledgeable local fisherman who caters to all angler levels. We learned so much about the ecosystem around the Biloxi MS gulf coast, and how to use different fishing techniques. Spotted some dolphins too. We left with a cooler full of sheepshead, black drum and southern flounder filets. Thanks again Chad!
