About Your Trip

Experience a unique coastal cast and blast adventure along the historic marsh, where winding tidal creeks, flooded grass flats, and endless stretches of spartina grass create a dynamic environment for both hunting and fishing in a single trip. This seasonal outing is centered around the clapper rail, also known as the king rail or marsh hen, a traditional marsh bird that thrives in these shallow, nutrient-rich ecosystems and offers an exciting upland-style hunt in a coastal setting.

The trip begins by navigating through shallow creeks and winding waterways until reaching productive flooded grass flats. These areas come alive with the incoming tide, pushing baitfish, shrimp, and wildlife into the grass and creating ideal conditions for both bird activity and redfish movement. Once on location, you will wade into the marsh and begin working through the flooded grass, flushing marsh hens as they move through the dense cover. The action is fast and unpredictable, with birds often appearing suddenly as they burst from the vegetation.

At the same time, this environment offers the chance to sight fish for tailing redfish cruising the spartina flats. These fish push through inches of water with their backs and tails exposed, feeding methodically along the grass edges. Spotting them requires patience and careful movement, while casting demands accuracy and a light touch to avoid spooking fish in the shallow water.

The combination of flushing birds and sight fishing redfish creates a constantly changing experience where every step in the marsh presents something new. One moment you are focused on birds flushing at your feet, and the next you are easing a cast toward a cruising redfish in glassy shallow water.

This is a true immersion into the coastal marsh, blending tradition, sight fishing, and seasonal opportunity into one memorable day on the water.

From giant rainbows on the Kenia River in Alaska, to steelheads on the Chilliwack in BC and all over the freestone creeks/rivers up and down the east coast. I lived in Blueridge for 10 years and guided there part-time and in 2008 I came back home to the sunshine state. Since then, I have really been focusing on dialing in the backcountry waters as polling for tailing floodtide reds in the beautiful spartina marsh mazes is my true passion.

Either fishing hard, learning, or just relaxing I guarantee a fun educational day on the water.

We met Mike around 7 in the morning, he explained the day and the challenges of a cold snap. The air temp had dropped 20-30 degrees over the past couple of days. Mikes knowledge of the fisheries were excellent and we were soon putting fish in the boat. We caught 30+ fish to include some nice keeper drum. From the moment we got on the boat, Mike took great care of us and pride in getting up on fish. He even cleaned our fish and provided them to a restaurant to prepare for us. Great day on the water with Capt. Mike.

Travel fishing is all about getting chances. Michael can show you ten times the fish you'd find on your own. I had an epic day, in a nasty cold snap- these things just don't go together without an experienced and crafty guide. Michael gets it done.
