Wake up and go fishing! A 4-hour fishing trip is a great way to fish and explore the local waters surrounding Key West. Our half-day trips usually leave the dock around 7:30 a.m. and return around 11:30 a.m. However, this may change depending on the conditions, time of year, and customer preference. Captain John's mission is always to provide the best fishing experience possible with the conditions at hand. His vessel, a 28' center console (built by Latitude Tournament Boats), is a true "hybrid" fishing machine. This means that on a nice day, you can comfortably fish offshore reefs, wrecks, and Gulfstream currents. You also have the option to fish backcountry channels, inshore wrecks, and nearshore patch reefs if the wind picks up. On a full day, we might have the opportunity to target multiple species both in the deep and the shallow. Captain John specializes in light tackle fishing. This means he'll match the rod and reel outfit to the size fish you're targeting to make for the best overall angling experience. If you would like to fly fish, the captain can accommodate you. However, you must bring your own fly fishing equipment. Expect to target Amberjack, Barracuda, Tuna, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, Grouper, and more, depending on the length of your trip. Evening Tarpon trips are also offered. Live bait makes a big difference. Pilchards, pinfish, herring, ballyhoo, and blue crabs are some of the varieties you are likely to find in the livewell. Catching bait is part of the charter, and while it may take some extra time, your captain knows it makes the difference between a fantastic fishing trip and one that's just okay. Tarpon are nocturnal creatures which means they are most active, and feeding, at night. If you really want to get into these massive creatures head out with Captain Chandler for a couple hours under the moonlight to hook into some big boys! Captain Chandler likes to focus on certain areas around Key West that hold a bunch of full-size Tarpon (35-100+lbs) as well as juvenile tarpon (5-35lbs). These fish stage up in certain areas depending on the tide and eat shrimp and baitfish all night long. The Marquesas Keys are legendary as a world class light tackle fishing destination. Located approximately 30 miles west of Key West just beyond the Boca Grande Channel, the Marquesas Keys are 36 miles east of the Dry Tortugas, which is the farthest key traveling west, in the entire Florida Keys chain. This atoll is hard to get to and gets a lot less fishing pressure. The sublime nature is a fantastic habitat for all types of inshore and flats dwelling species like Tarpon in the summer months, Baracuda in the winter months, Grouper in Bonefish and Permit year round! There are tons of other species as well, and you could easily see Jacks, SSharks, Snapper, Cobia, Ladyfish, Bluefish, and Redfish. Given the remoteness of the island, weather can play a huge roll in whether or not it is safe to make the voyage. So watch the radar, and if seas do not permit the journey, Captain Chandler will be more than happy to chase the fish with you inshore around Key West! On this Lobstering trip—perfect for families—you'll use nets and "tickle sticks" to bag Spiny Lobsters, which are a blast to catch and even better to eat. Catching Lobsters takes a little practice, but once you've done it once, you'll never forget it. Captain John can give you all the expert tips, but it's a simple task: use your tickle stick to coax the Lobsters into your net without letting them swim away, because if they decide to take off, they're surprisingly speedy. Once they're netted, you can swim back to the surface and throw that bug on ice! Captain John provides the nets and sticks, but you'll need to bring along your own snorkel, scuba mask, fins, and gloves if you choose to wear them.
