What are the most popular months to fish for mangrove snapper in Jacksonville?

In Jacksonville, the seasons for targeting mangrove snapper are influenced by various factors including water temperature, spawning behavior, and migration patterns. Generally, spring and summer mark the prime seasons for mangrove snapper fishing in Jacksonville's coastal waters. During these warmer months, mangrove snapper migrate into shallower waters to spawn, providing anglers with excellent opportunities to catch them nearshore and inshore. Anglers can often find mangrove snapper congregating around structure-rich environments such as reefs, wrecks, and bridge pilings, where they feed voraciously in preparation for spawning.

Fall can also be a productive time for mangrove snapper fishing in Jacksonville. As water temperatures begin to cool, mangrove snapper may move into deeper offshore waters or transition to different habitats. However, they can still be found in nearshore areas, particularly around structure and artificial reefs. Anglers who target mangrove snapper during the fall months may encounter them in slightly deeper waters compared to spring and summer, but they can still be caught using similar techniques such as bottom fishing with live bait or artificial lures.

While mangrove snapper may be more abundant during certain seasons, they can still be found in Jacksonville's waters year-round. During the cooler months of winter, mangrove snapper may move to deeper offshore waters or seek refuge in warmer areas, but dedicated anglers who know where to look can still find them in nearshore areas, particularly around structure-rich environments. Using a sliding sinker rig or knocker rig allows the bait to sink naturally to the bottom, where mangrove snapper are often found feeding.

Another effective technique for targeting mangrove snapper in Jacksonville is jigging with artificial lures. Jigging allows anglers to cover a wide area and present the lure at different depths, enticing mangrove snapper to strike. This technique is particularly effective when fishing around structure or areas with strong currents where mangrove snapper are known to feed.

Recent Reviews of Captain Experiences

Best fishing day ever! We told Captain Troy we were serious about getting "keeper" fish to eat, and he did not disappoint. A full 12-hour trip into the Atlantic got us 46 delicious keepers (variety of snapper species, Jacks, Cobia, trigger fish, and more) with plenty of non-stop action, thanks to Troy's laser-focus on the fish. He provided good coaching on the best methods to drop our lines and haul up the bounty. He kept the boat on top of fish continuously, and had us haul up our lines as the boat drifted off so he could reposition the boat back over the fish. We literally spent no time at all just hanging out waiting for bites in an empty ocean. He knows some good spots; for the most part we were the only boat on the water as far as the eye could see; we only noticed a couple of other boats wander over toward us in one location. Action also included fighting with one or two giant groupers (line snapped off before we could get them to the boat) and a couple of small sharks. It got exciting when we had to quickly haul in a snapper to save it from the jaws of an impressive 6-foot hammerhead. Overall an exciting, successful, exhausting day on the water from sunup to sundown. Enjoyed grilled Cobia and Jack kabobs for dinner that evening.

Mary Lee F. with Troy J. of St. Augustine, Florida
