Is booking a fishing guide worth the money?

Hiring a guide provides a number of benefits and many choose to book a fishing guide for a combination of experience, local knowledge, convenience, and cost-effectiveness.

Working with experienced fishing guides who know the best local spots and techniques can dramatically increase your odds of a great day. Having someone who is on the water every day and knows the area like the back of their hand is going to give you the best chances of success.

Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. When you consider all of the costs you would incur on your own such as the price of a boat, maintenance, insurance, gas, high-quality gear and tackle, repairs, and more, you’ll find that DIY is sometimes not worth the expense.

What is mahi mahi fishing in Jacksonville all about?

Mahi Mahi, also known as dolphin or dorado, are vibrant and exciting offshore species that attract anglers to the waters near Jacksonville. These pelagic fish are known for their dazzling colors, impressive speed, and acrobatic displays when hooked. Mahi Mahi are often found in offshore waters around floating debris, weed lines, and structures where they congregate in search of prey. Jacksonville's proximity to the Gulf Stream and offshore structures creates an ideal habitat for Mahi Mahi, providing anglers with thrilling opportunities for offshore fishing adventures.

Anglers targeting Mahi Mahi in Jacksonville commonly use trolling as a primary technique. High-speed trolling with brightly colored, flashy lures or natural baits like ballyhoo is effective in enticing strikes from these predatory fish. Mahi Mahi are attracted to the commotion created by the trolling lures, and their voracious feeding habits make them susceptible to well-presented offerings. Additionally, anglers often deploy teasers or spreader bars to mimic a school of baitfish, increasing the chances of enticing Mahi Mahi into the area.

The Mahi Mahi season in Jacksonville typically peaks during the warmer months, from late spring through early fall, aligning with the fish's migratory patterns along the Atlantic coast. These months provide optimal conditions for offshore fishing excursions, and anglers can capitalize on the abundance of Mahi Mahi in the offshore waters. The combination of the fish's striking appearance, impressive fights, and the offshore adventure makes targeting Mahi Mahi a highlight for anglers exploring the diverse and dynamic waters off the northeastern Florida coast.

What techniques are popular for catching mahi mahi fishing in Jacksonville

Mahi Mahi fishing in Jacksonville involves employing a variety of effective techniques to entice these vibrant and fast-swimming pelagic species. Trolling is a popular and productive method, with anglers deploying brightly colored lures, such as skirted baits or artificial plugs, behind the boat. High-speed trolling at varying depths allows anglers to cover large areas and imitate the movement of prey, attracting the attention of Mahi Mahi. Additionally, incorporating natural baits like ballyhoo into trolling spreads enhances the appeal, as Mahi Mahi are drawn to the commotion and movement in the water.

When targeting Mahi Mahi, anglers often keep an eye out for floating debris, weed lines, or structures in offshore waters. These areas act as magnets for Mahi Mahi, providing both shelter and a hunting ground for prey. Once located, anglers switch to casting or pitch baiting techniques, using live or cut bait like squid or small fish to entice strikes. The visual excitement of Mahi Mahi chasing and striking bait near the boat adds an extra layer of thrill to this method, making it a favorite among anglers seeking an interactive and dynamic fishing experience.

Deploying teasers or spreader bars is another effective technique for Mahi Mahi fishing in Jacksonville. These artificial bait clusters mimic a school of baitfish, creating additional attraction and encouraging Mahi Mahi to approach the boat. Anglers often use teaser setups ahead of their trolling lures, enhancing the chances of drawing Mahi Mahi into the vicinity. The combination of trolling, casting, and teaser techniques provides anglers with a versatile and exciting approach to targeting Mahi Mahi in the offshore waters off Jacksonville.

What other species are popular in Jacksonville?

Jacksonville's diverse waters offer anglers a multitude of species to target aside from the exhilarating pursuit of Mahi Mahi. Red Snapper, a prized offshore species, inhabits the artificial reefs, wrecks, and structures in the offshore waters near Jacksonville. These vibrant and delicious fish are known for their distinct appearance and firm white flesh, providing anglers with both a challenging fight and a rewarding catch. The regulated Red Snapper season ensures sustainable fishing practices while adding a thrilling element to offshore excursions.

For inshore anglers, the pursuit of Flounder is a popular endeavor. These flatfish inhabit the sandy bottoms of estuaries, tidal creeks, and nearshore areas. Flounder fishing often involves using live bait such as mud minnows or finger mullet, as well as soft plastic lures bounced along the bottom. The unique challenge of Flounder fishing lies in their ambush-style feeding behavior, requiring anglers to present baits strategically to entice strikes. Jacksonville's inshore waters provide a rich habitat for Flounder, making them a sought-after target for anglers exploring the backwaters.

Cobia, another formidable species, is often found nearshore and around structures such as wrecks and buoys. Known for their powerful fights and impressive size, Cobia are targeted using live bait like eels or pinfish, as well as artificial lures. The versatility of Cobia fishing, whether from the shore, pier, or boat, adds to their popularity among anglers. Jacksonville's diverse fishing opportunities ensure that anglers can tailor their excursions to their preferences, whether seeking the excitement of offshore Mahi Mahi fishing or the challenge of inshore and nearshore species like Red Snapper, Flounder, and Cobia.

Best fishing day ever! We told Captain Troy we were serious about getting "keeper" fish to eat, and he did not disappoint. A full 12-hour trip into the Atlantic got us 46 delicious keepers (variety of snapper species, Jacks, Cobia, trigger fish, and more) with plenty of non-stop action, thanks to Troy's laser-focus on the fish. He provided good coaching on the best methods to drop our lines and haul up the bounty. He kept the boat on top of fish continuously, and had us haul up our lines as the boat drifted off so he could reposition the boat back over the fish. We literally spent no time at all just hanging out waiting for bites in an empty ocean. He knows some good spots; for the most part we were the only boat on the water as far as the eye could see; we only noticed a couple of other boats wander over toward us in one location. Action also included fighting with one or two giant groupers (line snapped off before we could get them to the boat) and a couple of small sharks. It got exciting when we had to quickly haul in a snapper to save it from the jaws of an impressive 6-foot hammerhead. Overall an exciting, successful, exhausting day on the water from sunup to sundown. Enjoyed grilled Cobia and Jack kabobs for dinner that evening.

Our 6-hour in-shore fishing trip with Captain Billy was such a great time! He's definitely done his fair share of charters and we were lucky enough to catch quite a few fish. He followed all sizing restrictions and made sure we were on fish at every spot we went to. After, he showed us the proper way to clean fish. We will most definitely do another charter with him in the future.
