Reef And Wreck Fishing Jacksonville

Damn Good

Fishing the offshore waters of North East Florida can be world class. Lots of options depending on the time of year and water temps. We usually break it down into two categories trolling and bottom fishing. Trolling we prefer using live bait and 30 lb. conventional tackle. Targeting king mackerel, cobia, bonita, barracuda, sailfish, mahi and sometimes even blackfin tuna. This all depends on conditions and the time of year we fish. Usually we start the day by throwing a cast net for live bait or stopping on a piece of structure to jig up some minnows using a sabibki rig. Once the baitwells are loaded its off to the fishing grounds. All depending on where the bite has been best is where we start to fish. Sometimes it can be a few miles out and other days we need to run 10-12 miles offshore. Bottom fishing can be wide open off of our coast as well targeting red snapper, vermillion snapper, black seabass, amberjack, grey grouper, cobia and triggerfish just to name a handful. The live bait can work very well on the bottom as well fresh cut bait and frozen bait. Until you have felt the fight of a mule snapper or a big amberjack it's hard to express in words how hard they pull. We use heavy conventional tackle (80lb.) as well as big spinning rods for the fishing these waters. Read More

What is sailfish fishing in Jacksonville all about?

While Jacksonville may not be as renowned for sailfish as some other locations, these majestic fish do occasionally make appearances in the area's offshore waters. Sailfish are highly prized by anglers for their incredible speed, acrobatic jumps, and challenging fights. Typically found in warmer waters, sailfish migrate along the coast in pursuit of baitfish, making them occasional visitors to Jacksonville's offshore waters. When they do appear, sailfish provide anglers with exhilarating fishing experiences and memorable catches.

The best time to target sailfish in Jacksonville is during the warmer months of late spring and summer, when water temperatures rise and baitfish populations increase offshore. During this time, sailfish are more likely to be found in the area's Gulf Stream currents, where they feed on schools of baitfish such as flying fish, ballyhoo, and squid. Anglers targeting sailfish often troll with rigged baits or artificial lures, presenting them at varying depths to entice these pelagic predators. Additionally, anglers may encounter sailfish while offshore fishing for other species such as mahi-mahi, tuna, or wahoo.

When targeting sailfish in Jacksonville, anglers should be prepared for fast-paced action and thrilling fights. Sailfish are known for their lightning-fast strikes and blistering runs, often peeling line off the reel in spectacular fashion. Anglers must use heavy-duty tackle capable of handling the speed and power of sailfish, including stout rods, large reels, and strong line. Additionally, anglers should practice proper catch-and-release techniques to ensure the conservation of sailfish populations for future generations of anglers to enjoy. Overall, while sailfish may not be as common in Jacksonville as in some other destinations, their occasional presence in the area's offshore waters offers anglers the chance for exciting encounters and memorable fishing experiences.

What are the most popular months to fish for sailfish in Jacksonville?

In Jacksonville, the presence of sailfish in offshore waters tends to coincide with the warmer months of late spring through summer. During this time, water temperatures rise, and baitfish populations increase offshore, drawing sailfish closer to the coast. Sailfish are highly migratory and typically follow the movement of baitfish, particularly along the Gulf Stream currents. Anglers in Jacksonville can increase their chances of encountering sailfish by targeting areas where baitfish concentrations are high, such as offshore reefs, ledges, and temperature breaks.

The peak season for sailfish in Jacksonville is generally from late spring through early fall, when sailfish are most abundant and actively feeding in the area's offshore waters. However, their presence can vary from year to year depending on factors such as water temperature, currents, and baitfish availability. Anglers targeting sailfish during this time often employ trolling techniques with rigged baits or artificial lures to cover a wide area and maximize their chances of encountering these pelagic predators.

While sailfish may be more commonly encountered during the warmer months, it's important to note that they can still be caught in Jacksonville's offshore waters year-round, albeit less frequently. During the cooler months of fall and winter, sailfish may move farther offshore or southward in pursuit of warmer waters. Nonetheless, anglers venturing offshore during these seasons can still encounter sailfish, particularly when targeting other species such as mahi-mahi, tuna, or wahoo. Overall, while the peak season for sailfish in Jacksonville occurs during the warmer months, anglers have the opportunity to target these majestic fish throughout the year with the right techniques and strategies.

What techniques are popular for catching sailfish in Jacksonville?

When targeting sailfish in Jacksonville's offshore waters, anglers typically employ trolling techniques to cover a wide area and maximize their chances of encountering these fast-moving pelagic predators. Trolling allows anglers to present rigged baits or artificial lures at varying depths and speeds, effectively mimicking the movement of baitfish and enticing sailfish to strike. Anglers often troll along the edges of the Gulf Stream currents, where sailfish are known to congregate in pursuit of prey. Using outriggers and downriggers can help spread out the trolling spread and increase the chances of hooking into sailfish.

Rigged baits such as ballyhoo, mullet, or squid are commonly used when trolling for sailfish in Jacksonville. These baits are often rigged with circle hooks and rigged to swim naturally through the water, enticing sailfish to strike. Additionally, anglers may also use artificial lures such as skirted trolling lures, cedar plugs, or diving plugs to target sailfish. These lures can be trolled at various speeds and depths to mimic the movement of baitfish and trigger aggressive strikes from sailfish.

Once a sailfish is hooked, anglers must be prepared for a high-energy fight characterized by blistering runs, acrobatic jumps, and powerful dives. Sailfish are known for their speed and agility, often putting anglers' tackle and skills to the test. Anglers must use heavy-duty tackle capable of handling the strength and speed of sailfish, including stout rods, large reels, and strong line. Properly fighting and landing a sailfish requires patience, skill, and coordination among anglers to ensure a successful catch-and-release. Overall, trolling with rigged baits or artificial lures is the primary technique used by anglers in Jacksonville when targeting sailfish, offering the opportunity for thrilling encounters with these majestic pelagic predators.

What other species are popular in Jacksonville?

Apart from sailfish, Jacksonville's offshore waters offer a plethora of other exciting species for anglers to target. One notable species is the mahi-mahi, also known as dolphin fish or dorado, which is abundant in the area's warm offshore waters. Mahi-mahi are prized for their vibrant colors, fast growth rate, and delicious flesh, making them a highly sought-after gamefish. Anglers can target mahi-mahi using trolling techniques with rigged baits or artificial lures, as well as casting to floating debris or weed lines where these fish often congregate.

Another popular species in Jacksonville's offshore waters is the wahoo, known for its incredible speed and powerful strikes. Wahoo are typically found around offshore reefs, ledges, and temperature breaks, where they feed on baitfish and pelagic prey. Anglers targeting wahoo often use high-speed trolling techniques with lures such as skirted trolling lures, diving plugs, or high-speed jigs. Wahoo are highly prized for their firm white flesh and are considered one of the fastest and most challenging gamefish to catch.

Additionally, anglers in Jacksonville can target species such as tuna, marlin, kingfish, and grouper, depending on the time of year and prevailing conditions. Yellowfin and blackfin tuna are commonly found in offshore waters, particularly around underwater structures and areas with high baitfish concentrations. Marlin, including blue marlin and white marlin, are occasionally encountered by anglers trolling offshore waters for other species. Kingfish, also known as king mackerel, are abundant in Jacksonville's nearshore and offshore waters and provide exciting action for anglers trolling with live bait or artificial lures. Grouper species such as gag grouper and red grouper are found around offshore reefs and wrecks and are targeted using bottom fishing techniques with live or cut bait. Overall, Jacksonville's offshore waters offer a diverse range of species for anglers to target, ensuring thrilling fishing experiences year-round.

Captain Don is truly a 5 star fishing guide. He's a better guy. I've been fishing for over 50 years, and as I hoped, Captain Don showed me several ticks and trips I'd never seen. No matter your experience level, he has something to help. We had a great day on the water, and had a great conversation. Darn fish just kept bugging us though.

We had a great time with captain frank. Due to the storms that rolled in weeks prior to our trip and a nor' easter, we had to make due with the areas we had available to fish. The booking process was very easy and we enjoyed our time on the water.

Our 6-hour in-shore fishing trip with Captain Billy was such a great time! He's definitely done his fair share of charters and we were lucky enough to catch quite a few fish. He followed all sizing restrictions and made sure we were on fish at every spot we went to. After, he showed us the proper way to clean fish. We will most definitely do another charter with him in the future.
