March madness is finally over. It was very hectic this year with over 20 days on the river. A lot of fish caught and released. When the river gets this way it's always helpful to be with someone who knows the rivers and how to change with conditions. Fish get use to seeing the same kind of flies being used day in and day out. This is when you have to think outside of the box. It's times like this that flies such as the cripple were born. You could be using the best tied fly ever tied by the most known tyer only to have it refused. Why you ask? It maybe because everyone is using the same fly. A simple change up such as a cripple may do the trick. This past week for me it was midges that did the trick. But not the standard zebra midge. Nope that wouldn't work. They would eat one with a crystal bead and very small tuff of cdc. Same pattern but just a little differently tied.

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy. The trees are starting to bud out. You know what that means? I'll tell you. It means the weather is changing. It's spring type weather. What that means for the fly fishing person is that more bugs will begin to hatch. What kind? Blue-wing olives, March Browns, black caddis, tan caddis, midges galore!!! It means the fish will become very active will all the insects hatching. It's just starting!
We did really well with a March Brown imitation I developed some 15 years ago, just for the lower mountain fork. My clients hooked into 15 fish the first day and absolute fantastic second day with 49 fish hooked. All of them on my March Brown!

Fishing has been fabulous!!! A lot of fish to the net recently. After the ice storm of the year the river is clear and cold. Just the way the fish love it.
The weather has been great lately. Warm in the afternoons. The insect activity has been great when the sun comes out. Lots of blue-winged olives coming off a few caddis and of course midges. Come fish with us! We know how to get it done!!!

Fishing has been very good. Small size 16 and 18 hooks for this time of year. Midges soft hackles and caddis have all worked well. If you are going be careful. The sides of the river may still have ice!!!

Doubles are always my favorite thing to see! These two boys had a blast. I was afraid one them was going to jump out of the net before the got the other one. It makes for a fun day for sure.
Fishing has been excellent! Winter time the river is not nearly as crowded. It's a great time to be on the river. Morning has been cold this week so dress accordingly.
It's midge season so think small. It's still a little early for the streamer fishing but I will not be long before the big ones come up river to spawn!!!
