As the days get cooler, the fishing gets hotter down here in South Louisiana. The bull reds and jacks are schooling by the tens and even hundreds some days. I’ve been heading out to the edge of the Gulf to intercept these packs of maniacs. Doubling and tripling up on 30lb redfish on fly is a common occurrence and will continue till about thanksgiving. During the summer there are two options: If you want big boys, you head to the fringes of the Gulf of Mexico and look for massive bull reds, if you want numbers, you stay inside and fish the gin clear water in grassy duck ponds for slot reds. Personally, the slot reds are my favorite. They are plentiful, pop out clear as day when they come floating up, and have a beautiful copper coloration. The fishing has been pretty good considering the late cold fronts that have passed by. Speckled Trout are showing up in good numbers and the Redfish have been incredible. We have been getting consistent live bait which means it’s trout season. We are here for it!
