As the days get cooler, the fishing gets hotter down here in South Louisiana. The bull reds and jacks are schooling by the tens and even hundreds some days. I’ve been heading out to the edge of the Gulf to intercept these packs of maniacs. Doubling and tripling up on 30lb redfish on fly is a common occurrence and will continue till about thanksgiving. During the summer there are two options: If you want big boys, you head to the fringes of the Gulf of Mexico and look for massive bull reds, if you want numbers, you stay inside and fish the gin clear water in grassy duck ponds for slot reds. Personally, the slot reds are my favorite. They are plentiful, pop out clear as day when they come floating up, and have a beautiful copper coloration. A recent trip with a great crew out of Florida in town for a run at these Delacroix red fish!
We headed out making a short run south in the fog with the intention of fishing our way further south as the fog lifted. We got on fish at the first stop and never got off that shoreline. We moved down the grass edge picking up several fish at each stop until it was time to head in. They took pictures of the big girls and released them to fight another day. A great day with a great crew!
