WOW what a great way to start out the New Year fishing here off the coast of Fort Lauderdale.
Trolling the reefs has been a bit slow this January however when we ventured out just a little deeper between 200 and 400 hundred feet of water the black fin tunas have been biting ok in the early hours of the day but seemed as we got into the afternoon hours they were biting real good.

Not real sure what happen but the last few years has been producing more and more Wahoo’s also mostly in the same depth as the black fins.
I’m pretty sure they are feeding on the black fins.
Not just us, but all the boats seem to be bring in more and more Wahoo this being the best year I’ve seen yet.
Also while the Mahi mahi are not really in season right now BUT this year they seem to be showing up way before spring and what a welcomed surprise this is always a great crowd pleaser.
The bottom fishing has been expectedly good this year as lone as we have a little north current. No current no good too much current no good BUT a knot to a knot and a half good I mean real good.
Catching the vermilion snappers reel good along with quite a few red snappers ranging from 8 to 20 pounds another great crowd pleaser. And the best new of all we are catching them in state waters so we get to harvest them.
And once again showing up early the Greater Amber Jack SEA DONKEYS, talk about a fight! We had seen many a man give up the rod before landing one of these 30 to 80 pounders.
However an unwelcomed catch nice groupers are also biting BUT Sad to say out of season.
Some times I think these fish know they get to be set free. LOL
Fishing has been good overall, slow down for a couple of days for the peacock bass do it to the cold front bit everything went back to normal, largemouth been good as well on Lake Okeechobee with some big ones

Catching a lot of numbers as the water warms up. The Big girls will be going on the beds here in a bit with that moon phase here on Lake Okeechobee.
Still getting some decent numbers of peacocks- just need yourself a guide to show you where they're at! And the bite at Lake Okeechobee is starting to pick up. It's going to bust loose any day now!

Key Largo to Marathon Mid January 2023
Happy New Years to all from our wonderful Hawks Cay Resort location. Fishing over the holidays up till now has been spectacular in the Florida Keys, between Key Largo & Marathon. Just about everything is biting now on the reef / wrecks & offshore. The predominant bite offshore has been sailfish, wahoo, king mackerel & mahi-mahi or dolphin fish as we like to call them. Uncharacteristically for this time of year, we’ve been slamming the dolphins offshore between 120 feet - 300 feet while trolling wrecks looking for wahoo. For whatever reason they...

For whatever reason they are showing up, I’m totally happy about it.
The sailfish are here! They are around in good numbers between 100 - 180 feet & we’ve been getting multiple releases a day. Most of them have been caught either kite fishing, slow trolling live bait or pitching live ballyhoo at bait showers. The king mackerel have been caught in the same manner as the sailfish.
Like I said on my last report, it’s wahoo fishing time & onboard the Ace of Spades we’ve been catching them. Then bite has been up / down the outer edge of the reef & around the deep water wrecks between 115 feet - 250 feet of water. Trolling Normad plugs around 9 knots, high speed trolling lures with various size trolling weights & live bait fishing has been working for us.
On the reefs & wrecks, the Yellowtail snapper / mutton bite has still been consistent on the reefs between 45- 90 feet of water. This is also the best time of year for patch reef fishing.
recently aboard, Ms Jeniffer picked up this bruiser of a #redfish at 8.5 lbs it’s a great catch for us in the #flamingoeverglades It was released to fight again

Fishing in the last couple of weeks has been outstanding in the Florida Keys, between Key Largo & Marathon. The water is cooling down & the bite is in full swing on the reef / wrecks & offshore. We’ve been catching most of them slow trolling live bait & pitching live ballyhoo at bait showers. The blackfins are still super thick on the humps & it’s been nothing but pure fun! We are catching them in just about every way possible from trolling feathers, to live bait pilchards, to slow pitch jigging the Mobster! ( Captain Maurice’s secret weapon- try them) It’s also wahoo fishing time & I’ve been hearing of a few being caught. We onboard the Ace of Spades will actively start fishing for those hard fighting, tasty torpedoes throughout the holidays, so hopefully I’ll have something good to report on the next fishing report.
On the reefs & wrecks, the Yellowtail snapper / mutton bite has still been consistent on the reefs between 45- 90 feet of water and on the deeper water wrecks in 100 plus feet. Also the Spanish, cero, & king mackerel bite has been insane on the patch reefs out to the deeper reefs.

Hunt was great. Guide is extremely helpful and does everything you can to make sure you have a great experience. We booked this Hunt just because the way he treated us last time.
We had a great trip and caught lots of Mahi. The Mate stayed busy keeping the sea weed off the lures but the seaweed held lots of Mahi. We caught over 25 fish with 20 keepers over 20”. It was large seas but the captain kept us in fish all day. Just finished a meal of Grilled Mahi with Old Floridian Seasoning and Cilantro Salsa. Thanks!
Captain Brad was great. Very personable and he spent time explaining the techniques and equipment used for the area, which is what we wanted. The boat was about to be retired, but did the job.
Our captain was a great guide. Had a great knowledge of the wildlife and also a great respect for it as well. I would definitely recommend him for your iguana hunt!
