Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. What is goose hunting in Florida all about?

In Florida, goose hunting offers enthusiasts a unique and challenging hunting experience amidst the state's diverse landscapes. While Florida is more renowned for its waterfowl hunting opportunities such as ducks and other migratory birds, goose hunting also holds a special place for hunters looking to pursue these large, migratory birds. The most common species targeted in Florida include the Canada goose and the white-fronted goose, also known as the specklebelly. These geese can be found in various habitats across the state, including agricultural fields, wetlands, and coastal marshes, depending on the time of year and migratory patterns.

Goose hunting in Florida typically revolves around the winter months, when geese migrate south from their breeding grounds in northern regions. This seasonal movement brings geese into the state, providing hunters with opportunities to set up blinds or decoy spreads in strategic locations where geese are known to feed or rest. Hunters often use decoys and calling techniques to attract geese within shooting range, employing patience and skill to mimic natural behaviors and entice wary birds.

Successful goose hunting in Florida requires knowledge of local regulations, hunting seasons, and habitat preferences of the targeted species. Hunters must also be aware of migratory bird laws and restrictions set by state and federal wildlife agencies to ensure ethical and legal hunting practices. Overall, goose hunting in Florida offers a rewarding outdoor experience, combining the thrill of the hunt with the natural beauty and diverse ecosystems found throughout the Sunshine State.

What are the most popular months to go goose hunting in Florida?

In Florida, goose hunting seasons are structured to align with the migratory patterns of various species, providing hunters with opportunities to pursue these prized birds during specific times of the year. The primary goose hunting season in Florida typically begins in late fall and extends through the winter months, generally running from late November to February. This period coincides with the arrival of migratory geese from northern breeding grounds, including Canada geese and white-fronted geese (specklebellies), among others.

The timing of goose hunting seasons in Florida is crucial, as it aligns with the peak of migration when geese are more likely to be present in the state's agricultural fields, wetlands, and coastal marshes. Hunters often focus their efforts on setting up blinds or decoy spreads in areas where geese feed, rest, or travel during their migration southward. Strategies commonly involve using decoys to mimic feeding flocks and employing calling techniques to attract geese within shooting range, requiring both skill and patience to achieve successful hunts.

Throughout the hunting season, Florida wildlife management agencies carefully regulate hunting activities to ensure sustainable practices and the conservation of waterfowl populations. Hunters must adhere to specific regulations regarding bag limits, shooting hours, and licensing requirements set by state and federal authorities. By following these guidelines and respecting wildlife habitats, hunters can enjoy the challenges and rewards of goose hunting in Florida while contributing to the preservation of migratory bird populations for future generations.

What techniques are popular for goose hunting in Florida?

In Florida, goose hunting involves several types of hunting methods and techniques tailored to the behavior and habitat preferences of migratory geese. One of the primary techniques employed by hunters is field hunting, which typically involves setting up blinds or camouflaged pits in agricultural fields where geese come to feed on crops such as corn, wheat, or barley. Hunters strategically place decoys—often large spreads of full-body or shell decoys—to simulate a feeding flock and attract geese within shooting range. This method requires careful scouting to identify active feeding areas and understanding wind patterns to set up blinds effectively.

Another effective technique for goose hunting in Florida is waterfowl hunting over water. This method involves setting up blinds or using layout boats in marshes, lakes, or along coastal areas where geese gather to rest or feed on aquatic vegetation. Hunters use decoys that mimic geese floating on the water's surface, supplemented with calling techniques to draw in passing flocks. Waterfowl hunting over water requires patience and stealth, as geese are often more cautious in these environments and can quickly detect human presence.

Goose hunting in Florida also includes the use of calling techniques, where hunters mimic the sounds of geese using specialized calls such as honkers or speck calls. Calls are essential for attracting geese from a distance and convincing them that the area is safe for feeding or resting. Effective calling requires practice and an understanding of the specific vocalizations and behaviors of the targeted goose species. By combining these techniques with proper concealment and scouting, hunters can enhance their chances of a successful goose hunting experience in Florida's diverse hunting grounds.

What species are popular for goose hunting in Florida?

When goose hunting in Florida, hunters primarily target several species of migratory geese that pass through or winter in the state. One of the most common targets is the Canada goose (Branta canadensis), which includes different subspecies such as the Atlantic and Mississippi Valley populations. These geese are known for their distinctive honking calls and can be found in a variety of habitats including agricultural fields, freshwater marshes, and urban parks where they feed on grasses, grains, and aquatic vegetation.

Another sought-after species for goose hunters in Florida is the white-fronted goose, also known as the specklebelly (Anser albifrons). Specklebellies are identifiable by their characteristic white front and black bars on their bellies, along with pinkish bills. These geese migrate from their Arctic breeding grounds to spend winters in the southern United States, including Florida, where they frequent agricultural fields and wetlands in search of food.

Snow geese (Chen caerulescens) are also occasionally targeted by hunters in Florida, particularly during their migration periods. Snow geese are known for their striking white plumage and are often found in large flocks in open fields or coastal marshes where they feed on grasses, sedges, and aquatic plants. While less common than Canada geese and specklebellies in Florida, snow geese present a unique hunting challenge and opportunity for hunters who pursue waterfowl throughout the state's diverse landscapes. Overall, goose hunting in Florida offers a variety of species to pursue, each with its own unique characteristics and hunting strategies that add to the excitement and challenge of the hunt.

Captain Experiences - I discussed my trip (with Captain Janot) with Jake from Captain Experiences on Sunday 07/28/24. My Egyptian Goose and Iguana hunt with Captain Janot: Pros: Janot was a nice, pleasant guy with a clean boat, who gave me good safety instructions and had plenty of cold beverages. He made some adjustments to accommodate my health and age impairments. Janot got me on a good Egyptian Goose that I shot for a mounter in the first 30 minutes of the hunt. Cons: Janot hunted me for only 3.25 hours instead of the contracted 4 hours. Janot took me to his "honey hole" and we found darn few iguanas; Janot even openly admitted that the City had very recently been in the "honey hole" to take out the iguanas. Instead of 1) taking me to another hunting area with a substantial number of shootable iguanas or 2) letting me know ahead of time that the City had all but wiped out the iguana crop so I could try to book another hunt with some other outfitter or 3) hooking me up with another outfitter, Janot chose to take me to an area he knew was nearly devoid of iguanas. And Yes, there was a few, but nearly all of the iguanas that we saw were less than 1.5 pounds. Prior to the hunt, Janot told me that I should be able to harvest 15-20 and maybe as many as 30 iguanas depending on how long it would take us to get me a goose. In 2.75 hours, he managed to get me 6 iguanas - a good 5 pounder, a tailless 4 pounder, two 1.25 pounders and two .75 pounders. We may have seen about 200 total iguanas of which about 28-30 were shootable. Of those 28-30 shootable iguanas, we harvested only 6, wounded about 14-15 that got away, and missed about 8-10. Janot did not have a retrieving dog which would have really helped with those wounded iguanas that made it into the water or that crawled away into an area where shooting wasn't possible but retrieval was possible. All in all, based solely on my hunt with Janot, I give Janot as a man a thumbs up. I give Janot as a boat captain a thumbs up. I give Janot as an outfitter a thumbs down. And I give the hunt two thumbs down. I would never ever book another hunt with Janot unless he paid my way back and forth to the hunt site from Montana and gave me a free hunt. This was an expensive hunt that was almost completely a bust !!! Janot could have and should have done much better! Kim Latterell Billings, Montana
