About Your Trip

The Florida Keys backcountry and nearshore waters around Islamorada hold an exceptional variety of species, and Captain Juan's four to eight hour inshore trip gives you access to some of the most sought-after fish in the Keys. Tarpon, snook, permit, barracuda, jack crevalle, mangrove snapper, lane snapper, mutton snapper, black grouper, and red grouper are all in play depending on the season, the tide, and where fish are holding on a given day.

That species
list spans multiple environments and techniques, and Captain Juan moves between them throughout the trip to put clients on the most active fish available. Permit on the flats, tarpon rolling through a channel, snook tucked tight to mangrove edges, and grouper holding on nearshore structure all require different presentations and a guide who knows when and where to find each one. Captain Juan's deep familiarity with the Islamorada fishery and his investment in the latest tackle and equipment give every angler on board a genuine advantage from the moment lines go in the water.

Islamorada sits at the center of one of the most diverse inshore and nearshore fisheries in Florida, with access to backcountry flats, tidal channels, and reef structure all within range of a single trip. The four to eight hour window gives Captain Juan the flexibility to cover meaningful water and adjust the approach as conditions develop throughout the day.

The 22-foot Ranger bay boat is powered by a new generation Yamaha SHO 250-horsepower four-stroke, with a trolling motor and Raptor shallow water anchor for quiet, precise positioning in skinny water. Live wells, a T-top, JL stereo, dry storage, and fish box round out a well-appointed platform built for a serious day on the Keys. There is no onboard restroom, so plan accordingly.

Book a trip with Captain Juan out of Islamorada and experience the full range of what the Florida Keys inshore fishery has to offer.

Independent Guide
Capt Juan was born and raised in beautiful Puerto Rico where the pristine Caribbean water was his playground. Since Capt Juan was in diapers he already had a fishing rod in hand spending as much time in the water as on land and building a passion for fishing and water sports that is as strong now as it's ever been. He fished both the inshore and offshore waters of Puerto Rico where he started building a vast amount off knowledge of sport fishing in both inshore waters and off shore.

As a young man Capt Juan joined the US Navy where he was station in California onboard the USS MT. Vernon. After traveling the world and learning about seamanship it was time to move on and seek a higher education. Capt Juan moved to Rhode Island where he enrolled at Johnson and Whales University and graduated with high honors and two degrees, one in Hospitality Management and the other in Travel and Tourism Management. Somehow Capt Juan found time to guide part time on the waters of Narragansset Bay for Striped Bass and giant Bluefish.

It was in Rhode Island that Capt Juan met his wife Kelley, a beautiful country girl from Chichester, New Hampshire. After graduation they both started working at the Cheeca Lodge and Spa in Islamorada, Florida Keys. It was then that Capt Juan decided that it was time to seek his real passion, fishing! Capt Juan is an easygoing, fun family man. There is nothing that Capt Juan loves more than sharing his passion for the water with his anglers. In 2008 our family was blessed with our first son Tony and two years later our second son Jimmy joined our family. Capt Juan is currently the Florida Sportsman Magazine weekend fishing forecaster for the Florida Keys backcountry and has been featured in the Florida Sportsman TV show and Florida Sportsman Magazine.
