About Your Trip

If you've ever wanted to nail big Carp on tiny dry flies, this trip is for you! Although when many fly anglers think "fly fishing", they're picturing Trout somewhere in the Rocky Mountains, Riley specializes in finding and hooking lowland species such as Carp and Bass. Catching a carp on the fly is hard at first, which is why your guide loves them, and he would love it even more if he could help you get on one yourself!

When you go out with one of the guides to chase these feisty specimens you can expect to spend your day wading around lakes and river systems stalking your quarry stealthy and precisely. These fish are very aware of their surroundings, and you get no second chances. It’s either a perfect cast and presentation or the fish spooks, and often, the latter. When they do eat, however, you’re can bet your bottom dollar they're going to take you out to the backing!

Certain times of the year, you can also target smallmouth buffalo on the fly, which grow even larger than carp, and are actually indigenous to Texas waters. Teaching trips are also welcomed for folks that have never held a fly rod. If this trip is more in line with your skill level, you can expect it to be more centered around the fundamentals, rather than finding and catching a fish, but it won't be too long before your out to the backing on a giant carp as well!

Hi, I’m Riley! I got into fly fishing around 2016 skiing up in Steamboat. I asked a local on the ski lift what he likes to do in the warmer months. Fly fishing became the main topic of discussion, so I flew home and did some research. I found that Austin is home to some of the most elite guides out there being Jt Van Zandt, Alvin Dedeaux, and David Mangum. I didn’t know Austin had so much appeal for that kind of thing. So, I started looking for spots to catch bass… which led me to buy a rod… which led to thousands of dollars being spent and 100s of hours spent on the river. No complaints! I just simply fell in love with the sport! I caught my first bass on the fly in my hometown and later got into carp on the fly. Carp on the fly was an extremely tough uphill battle, but finally caught one. Soon after that I began figuring out characteristics of these fish that led to tons of catches and gaining confidence for the salt water. Later I went on my first guided redfish trip, and almost had the texas slam that day. It changed me… for the better. All I wanted to do was get down there and guide on the salt. Well… not as easy as it may sound or look. Long story short, I got into the fire service hoping to get hired on with Corpus Christi to then get hours on a skiff to captain and later guide the salt full-time. Unfortunately I fell in love with the fire side and got hired with a local department in my area. So, the salty dream has slipped away for now… but maybe one day! As years progress I am hoping to be an elite fishing guide and instructor for carp on the fly on my local waters. There are many other options of fish species where I guide as well, but Carp are kinda my thing. I like to call them a poor mans redfish… they back, turn, feed, and tail in a very similar manner. So if you want to catch one of the hardest fish to land in the fresh water, then I am your guy. If you would like to get warmed up and gain confidence for redfish? I am your guy with that as well. I hope my story brings you out to the water and motivates you to go out and try to catch yourself some! Get SALTY! Cheers

What makes you different from other guides?
I offer fishing trips that are not very common, and I have a blast doing so. For me fly fishing is an intuitive hunt. It keeps us on our toes throughout the entire trip due to sight casting at feeders. I am not in a drift boat watching the bobber… I want to go find that fish and present him a meal without causing it to spook. It is not easy, and is incredibly hard to teach… UNLESS YOU ARE HUNGRY. Come and play!

Techniques

Everything Else to Know

Light is the name of the game... Big boots can spook fish. I wear water shoe like footwear, like booties almost. So, normal tennis shoes will get you by, but a solid grippy sole is recommended. Also polarized sunglasses are a huge plus. For full day trips I can offer a good lunch and snacks for a additional fee of about $30 back at the truck. The length of the trip would determine if you would need or want food. Otherwise bring your own. Rod, reel, leader, and flies are included.
You'll need to buy a fishing license before getting out there. Find out more about licenses here.
We use a cashless autopay system. We'll send you a boarding pass, and on the day of the trip, your guide will scan your boarding pass to automatically transfer the remaining balance. The only cash needed is to tip your guide (we recommend 20%).
Cancel for free up to 2 days before the trip and receive credit back to your account. Cancelling within 2 of the trip will forfeit your deposit to the guide. Day-of cancellations and no-shows will be charged the full balance of the trip to their card.
In the event of inclement weather you'll be covered by out 100% Weather Guarantee and will not lose your deposit.
