About Your Trip

If you're a duck hunter looking to shoot with one of South Texas' best outfitters, you're in the right place. Brandon is an expert hunter and a great guide who will put you in the right place to bring down some waterfowl on Matagorda Bay!

Every year, hundreds of thousands of waterfowl stop over in South Texas during their annual migration. The species you can target here are numerous, including Wigeons, Mottled Ducks, Pintails, Redheads,
Teals, Gadwalls, Shovelers, Mergansers, Scaup and Black Bellys!

You can opt for either a morning or afternoon trip, or go all day! If you choose to get out there in the morning, you'll arrive an hour and a half before sunrise and get ready to go. Brandon will get you out to the hunting areas by first light, and then it's time to start shooting! On an afternoon trip, you'll arrive before noon to get set up, and then motor out to the blinds aboard Brandon's 21' Shoalwater bay boat, which is equipped with a 250-HP Yamaha outboard.

Brandon will provide you with the blind and all the decoys, and just asks that you bring your own waders, guns, ammunition (non-toxic shot only), and a good attitude. The ducks are already on their way—what are you waiting for?!

Communication was extremely difficult from the start. Brandon was slow to respond to texts and rarely answered calls, making it hard to coordinate even basic details. Most questions were met with “we won’t know until the day before,” which made planning difficult for a paid, guided hunt.

At 9 PM the night before the hunt was the first time we meaningfully discussed logistics.
At that time, he stated that groups are never mixed and that we would be hunting alone. Due to weather, he coordinated a change in location, which we understood.

However, at 5 AM the morning of the hunt, I received a call saying we would need to hunt with another group. I later learned that group had not originally been booked for that day. This was a major change from what had been communicated the night before.

During the hunt, we were expected to help tear down the blind and pick up decoys, which was not advertised as part of a “fully guided” experience. To his credit, Brandon did work with me to replace an afternoon fishing trip with an additional hunt to try to make things right.

Unfortunately, that second hunt was also problematic. We hunted public land with one of his guides, the boat broke down, and we had to wait approximately two hours to be picked up. It also did not appear that the area had been adequately scouted, as we spent time driving around and repeatedly kicked up ducks while trying to find a spot.

Across two hunts, we harvested a total of four birds, all on public land—an experience I realistically could have put together on my own without paying for a guided trip.

Overall, the lack of communication, last-minute changes, mixed groups, mechanical issues, and poor execution made this a frustrating and disappointing experience, especially given the cost and how the trip was marketed.

Hey David, thank you for leaving this feedback and for taking the time to speak with me earlier. I appreciate the conversation.

Brandon’s team actively scouts up to the day prior to each trip, which is why exact starting locations aren’t finalized until closer to the hunt. With a strong weather front moving through, the team was transparent ahead of time that the hunt was close to being canceled. After continued scouting, they identified one
protected location that could safely be hunted.
Because only one location was viable, they moved forward only after both groups scheduled for the 17th agreed, so neither party felt disadvantaged. Each group had its own guide during the hunt. I apologize for any miscommunication or lack of clarity leading up to that morning, as we understand how important clear expectations are on a guided trip.

I’m glad we were able to connect afterward and work toward making things right.
