Join Captain Joao for a scenic and action-filled fishing adventure along the stunning Algarve coastline, where the deep blue Atlantic meets productive nearshore reefs just a few nautical miles from shore. This seasonal trip is perfect for anglers looking to experience Portugal’s rich coastal fishery while enjoying beautiful scenery, fresh ocean air, and steady fishing action.

As you cruise along the coastline within about 3 nautical miles of shore, you'll have the chance to target some of the most common and rewarding fish found in these waters. The trip typically begins with trolling along productive routes, where you may encounter fast-moving pelagic species such as Skipjack Tuna and Bonito. These fish are known for their speed, energy, and strong fights, making them a fun and exciting way to start the day on the water.

After trolling, the trip transitions to reef and bottom fishing over depths ranging from approximately 20 to 80 meters, or 65 to 260 feet. Here, the crew will anchor over productive structure and deploy baited rigs to target a variety of coastal species. These reef environments are rich with marine life and provide consistent opportunities for action throughout the trip.

Captain Joao and his friendly crew will guide you through each step of the process, making this experience enjoyable for both beginners and experienced anglers. Whether you're learning new techniques or refining your skills, the focus is on creating a relaxed and rewarding day on the water.

Depending on the catch and local regulations, anglers may be able to take home a limited quantity of fish per person. This is managed carefully to ensure sustainable fishing practices and the long-term health of the fishery, while still allowing guests to enjoy the reward of fresh, locally caught seafood.

Captain João, the Skipper, was born in 1969 in Portugal and has had a passion for the sea and fishing since he was a child. With a wide professional experience in tourism and events, in 2013 he opened a tourist maritime business activity, focusing on Big Game fishing at the Olhao-Algarve, thus fulfilling the desire to work on what he likes the most. Along with this achievement, he is committed to practice sustainability and protection of the species, by catching, tagging, and releasing them, as well as collaborating with scientific researchers. Always thinking about improving is capabilities and the quality of customer service, Capt. Joao was admitted as a IGFA CAPTAIN. Capt. João and team are prepared to provide the best Big Game experience in Algarve-Portugal.

Capt. João's current charter company was created in 2016 and is dedicated to Big Game Fishing on the Algarve shore, departing from the Olhão Marina.

Capt. João operates a 36' Riviera refitted in 2023. It is stable, reliable, and designed for the deep blue ocean. The twins 370 HP Cummins engines give the boat a cruise speed of 18 knots and a top speed of 26 knots. Amenities on board include a toilet for your convenience, a kitchen to prepare your meals, and a comfortable area for leisure dining. But most important, it comes with a fighting chair, outriggers, downriggers, and all essentials of a fishing machine.

Rods, reels, tackle, lures, and bait are included. The crew is ready to receive you aboard for the offshore fishing experience and will accommodate you and your party in this unique adventure.

All rods, reels, and tackle are included, but we also recommend bringing sunglasses, sunscreen, weather-appropriate clothing, and any gear of your own you want to use on the trip.

You'll need to buy a fishing license before getting out there. Find out more about licenses here.

This trip is managed by an outfitter. Joao will be your point of contact and you will go out with one of their guides.

We use a cashless autopay system. We'll send you a boarding pass, and on the day of the trip, your guide will scan your boarding pass to automatically transfer the remaining balance. The only cash needed is to tip your guide (we recommend 20%).

Cancel for free up to 30 days before the trip and receive credit back to your account. Cancelling within 30 of the trip will forfeit your deposit to the guide. Day-of cancellations and no-shows will be charged the full balance of the trip to their card.

In the event of inclement weather you'll be covered by out 100% Weather Guarantee and will not lose your deposit.

In the event of inclement weather, our guides will check the conditions and make the final call on whether its safe to go on the trip. If they decide the trip needs to be postponed, we'll work closely with you to reschedule or provide a credit for the full deposit, which can be applied to any of our trips in the US and beyond.

Each trip's price is determined by the guide and reflects all associated costs. A significant factor in pricing is often the type of boat and the corresponding fuel expenses. Additional costs may include leases, marina or slip fees, and the expenses involved in providing and maintaining the necessary gear for your trip.
