About Your Trip

The following information should help you be prepared to have a safe and enjoyable day.

Weather: I will send an email with the latest weather forecast a few days before the trip, but things change quickly around here, so it's not a bad idea to check the weather again closer to your departure.

Attire: Please dress for the weather and in layers that can be adjusted to the changing conditions throughout the day. I provide
a 22-Liter dry bag for each angler to store clothing and belongings. Waders are not required, but please choose footwear that you don't mind getting wet. The boat is inflatable, so no stiletto heels or studded boots;-)

Travel: We'll meet at Red's Fly Shop at the appointed time and head out to the launch from there in my rig. Be sure to print or save directions from your location before you depart as you may lose signal en route. I plan to be on the water within an hour of your appointment and off the water 8 hrs later, but this is not an exact science (wind, unplanned stops, excessive fun), so please plan accordingly.

Compliance: We will be fishing in a catch-and-release fishery with single, barbless hooks. I will need to verify that you have a valid Washington fishing license - please email or text me a copy. You may be able to get a license at the shop, but it's safer to get one online before you depart.

Safety: I am CPR and First Aid certified as required by Washington State for all fishing guides. I have a first aid kit on the boat, and will provide each angler with an inflatable PFD. When fishing areas where cellular signal is not reliable I also carry a satellite communication device for emergency use.

Fishing: My email just before your trip will contain the latest info on the river and fishing conditions (example below)
- Flows at Umtanum (near Red's) are currently around 2400 cfs and expected to drop slowly
- Nymphs under indicators or stimulators will likely be our primary technique, but dry flies on the surface, and streamers can find
success when fished under the right conditions. We will be prepared to deploy any of these tactics including some combinations for
prospecting.
- We will be targeting Rainbow Trout and Westslope Cutthroat Trout, but may encounter other species including Steelhead.
- Potential Hatches: Skwala Stoneflies (Here's a recent post I wrote about fishing the Skwala hatch if you're interested)
- I have all of the gear listed below for each angler, but will gladly accommodate use of your own favorite gear if you prefer.
> 9' 5wt Sage Foundation Fly Rod w/ Montucky Reel from Fly Project
> 9' 3x-6x tapered leader from Scientific Angler
> Flies, Tippet, Weights, Indicators, Desiccant, and Floatant

Sustenance: I will have an assortment of snacks, lunches, and (non-alcoholic) beverages available, but feel free to bring any of your favorite pairings with a day on the river - there's room in the cooler.

Memories: While there is no substitute for your own recollections and reflections, I do have an assortment of equipment on board for use in capturing as much as I can of the trip for your enjoyment. My goal is that the capture process is virtually invisible to you. I will share all of the clips and pics with you shortly after the conclusion of our trip along with a curated video - Please note that only imagery (no dialogue) is saved and shared, so rest assured that what you say on the river, stays on the river. Something akin to angler-guide confidentiality:-)

My name is Tyson, I was born in Oregon, raised in Alaska, and have lived in Washington for the last 25 years. I love the Pacific and Inland Northwest! I learned to fish at an early age, drifting the Kenai river for trout and salmon with my Dad. I was that “one more cast” kid who was never quite ready to call it a day. Like my Dad, I enjoy getting others onto fish – especially for the first time – at least as much as I enjoy catching them myself. Regardless of your experience level I would love to take you fishing!

Rapid Fire Guide Q & A

What’s the biggest fish you’ve caught?
As a kid in Alaska, I was spoiled with Halibut (185lb), Salmon (60lb Chinook/King & 20lb Coho/Silver), and 30" rainbow trout and dolly varden (char) on the regular. Here in the Inland Northwest, I may not beat my childhood records, but I'm having a lot of fun catching trout on the surface - something we didn't get a lot of in AK.
If you were cooking for all your friends what would you cook?
I get the most requests for my smoked brisket.

Rapid Fire Guide Q & A

Here in the Inland Northwest, I may not beat my childhood records, but I'm having a lot of fun catching trout on the surface - something we didn't get a lot of in AK.
If you were cooking for all your friends what would you cook?
I get the most requests for my smoked brisket.
What’s your favorite band?
With 4 children, 3 of whom are musicians, my tastes are pretty eclectic. Jack Johnson, Zac Brown Band, Marvin Gaye, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Gwen Stefani, Tyler Childers, Morgan Wallen, and all the 80s and 90s stuff I grew up to.
What’s your favorite movie?
Cliche Alert! "A River Runs Through It". But, Forrest Gump, Matrix, Star Wars, Bourne are right up there.
What’s your favorite sports team?
Seattle Supersonics (RIP), and then Gonzaga Basketball
What’s your drink of choice?
Coffee, Water, Dr. Pepper, and Huckleberry Vodka in that order.
What was your last halloween costume?
The Anchorman
What do you want for Christmas this year?
Fly Rod Tubes for the Tacoma, of course!
How did you get started guiding?
I don't think I realized it growing up, but my Dad was essentially an unpaid guide, and I his deckhand - hosting a near constant flow of friends and family coming up for their once-in-a-lifetime trip to Alaska. I think I fell in love with sharing that special place and the look on a their faces when they connect with a wild fish. After 25 years as a tech startup founder and CEO, I got to return to my first love - fly fishing.
What makes you different from other guides?
I feel like I'm running the play in reverse. Most of the guides I know are young, at the beginning of their adult lives. Me, I've done a lot of living and am getting to do this as a kind of reward for all time spent toiling on desks, phones, and airplanes.
