trip description for Islamorada Tarpon on the Fly in Islamorada

Head out with Captain Randy to spot, stalk, and sight-cast to migrating Silver Kings on the gorgeous Florida Key's flats! This trip is not for the faint of heart! Tarpon are smart; they have great eyesight, they are very skittish, and sometimes they're flat out just not hungry! Being able to double-haul and make a good cast to the fish is just the first step—convincing a full-grown tarpon to actually eat your fly is a whole other business! Luckily, Captain Randy has spent most of his adult life throwing flies at these overgrown minnows, and knows all the best secrets, nuances, and stripping techniques to give you the best chances of hooking into the fight of your life! On a normal day, Captain Randy will meet you at the dock behind the famed Lorelei Restaurant in the heart of Islamorada. (Note: Randy keeps his boat trailered, so he can accommodate other pickup locations as well). After you hop aboard his 18' Hells Bay poling skiff (an absolute flats fishing machine) you'll head out to either the gulf side or stay inland to scout out the flats and back bays where these migrating tarpon like to pull off and rest or feed. Stalking the flats, Captain randy will either pole you up a flat, or anchor his skiff with his pole to wait for Tarpon to push through. Keeping your eye's peeled for the flashing glimmer of a rolling Tarpon, or the dark torpedo-like shadow of a cruising fish, you'll be at the bow of the boat, 12 weight in one hand, your fly in the other, poised and ready for action! It is always critical to spring into action quickly and efficiently when a tarpon is within range, and while this might sound straightforward and routine, wait till you feel how fast your heart starts racing when you hear Randy say: "1 o'clock. 40 feet." Don't forget your polarized sunglasses! These are essential out on the flats to help eliminate glare and see the fish as quickly as possible. Captain Randy can provide the rest of the gear for your trip if you need it, and will have a cooler with ice, water, and soft drinks ready to rock and roll. Feel free to bring a snack or pick up a sandwich from the Trading Post down the street on your way to the dock. You can also bring any other drinks of your choice as well to be stored in the cooler on board. Read More

Captain Randy was kind, very knowledgeable of the area as well as where to find the giant Tarpon. We had a wonderful time talking about everything, getting to know one another and We appreciated his extensive knowledge of fishing the Islamorada waters. His equipment is new and tackle is spot on and we enjoyed every moment of our trip.

  • ★★★★★
Great day out with Captain Billy B that I strongly recommend. When I said I wanted to catch trout, I was not expecting to catch over 50 on a 6 hour trip. Not only does Captain Billy know his fishing spots in the Everglades but he will also take the time to teach you how to improve your techniques. How to catch a fish at almost every cast. am sure he is great with kids. If you are looking for a monthly rental, or even buying a house in the area, he is also your man.

Great work Captain Phil. Had a good time on the boat and caught fish all through the 8 hour day. Even when the bite slowed down captain phil ran all over to get back on the bite. We had our trout limit within the first hour of the fishing. He showed me allot of tips for casting under mangroves. Looking forward to another trip soon.

Damn great time on the water with Ben. He was willing to quickly adjust to last minute changes (remember, when you are replying to messages from Captain Experiences they might not get to the guide you are using through them). Ben got us into multiple species of fish using various methods of angling. When our time was up, we had a few "keepers" that Ben filleted up for us. It was a perfect day on the water. Thanks for the great time Ben and, more importantly, thank you for your service to our country! DO NOT HESITATE to book a trip with Ben.

Had two great days on the water with captain Eric. Even though it was pretty windy Captain Eric put me in fish. Enjoyed the fishing and enjoyed my time on the water with captain Eric. Next time I'm in the Keys I will be looking forward to fishing with Captain Eric.

We truly enjoyed our fly fishing trip with Capt GW. His boat was clean and comfortable and Capt GW was very personable and knowledgeable. We had some tougher conditions with wind that allowed him to give me so much needed help and encouragement on techniques to help my skills. But alas, no adrenaline moments of catching backwater fish, just the adrenaline of trying to make the right cast in the right spot. We saw a great deal of sea life as an addition to the friendly camaraderie, and that was a bonus.

John Paul knew where the fish were and what they wanted to eat. We had a good day on the water with lots of spotted trout, some trevally, and a mangrove snapper. No snook or tarpon this early in the season (late Feb).

Wonderful trip. Wonderful captain. First rate. Gentle but firm with a rookie- just what I wanted. Just what I needed. He would have stayed out longer but my arms, they were jello. Also, incredibly informative about the different fisheries, the environment, the current challenges facing the keys - a joy to watch cast a fly, tie knots and an all-around nice guy - thanks Capt. GW for a first-rate introduction to fly-fishing in the keys. Kind regards, Pete L. (Yarmouth, Maine).

Captain GW was an awesome guide! As an angler I have a higher standard, however fishing with my 12 year old daughter, I was hoping that we’d get someone who was patient, knowledgeable and an all around good guy as well. Some guides are kinda too salty, but GW was great! Him and my daughter really hit it off, and he definitely put us on the fish, even with a hard wind. His boat kept us dry and rode really well despite the conditions. You can tell that he really loves what he does and enjoys the “total experience” of fishing these beautiful waters. We saw manatees, dolphin, all kinds of birds including flamingos! It was an awesome experience caught snook and redfish and had lots of action. Great guy, great boat, great experience.
