Shrimp For The Win!
I always say, “Fish are Fickle.” That’s particularly true this time of year with the advent of a passing cold front every three to four days. One day the fish are active, the next day lethargic.

After a cold front, even when I take the time to catch scaled sardines before picking up my charter clients, the fish barely respond to them. Fortunately, I always stop on my way to the boat ramp and buy some live shrimp for a backup. Having those shrimp aboard usually saves the day.

At times like these, turning shrimp can
make all the difference in the world. These hardy baits are appealing to game fish even when bait fish become scarce, dramatically increasing your chances of a successful catch.

Shrimp are known as the “Sara Lee” of baits. “Nobody doesn’t like a Sara Lee.” Snook, redfish, seatrout, sheepshead, and more love them. I could go on and on, but you get the picture. Not to sound like “Bubba” from the movie Forrest Gump, but you can catch fish with live shrimp, dead shrimp, frozen shrimp, or pieces of shrimp. “That’s, that’s about it!”

Additionally, crustaceans like shrimp are not only versatile but also resilient in colder water conditions, which makes them a reliable choice when other baits fail. Their natural scent and movement attract a wide variety of species, ensuring that anglers have a dependable option throughout fluctuating water temperatures.

If you like to fish with artificials or flies, shrimp imitations are the perfect cold-weather bait.

With Tampa Bay water temperatures dropping in the mid 60s the Sheepshead & Mullet action has been the go-to species as these fish congregate around oyster beds, Mangrove lines and any type of structure that produces food for them.

Sheepshead and Mullet are hot right now on our Tampa bay shallow flats. We still have a few huge rays hanging out but no for long as our water temps are dropping

Hot bite to start summer with schools of mangrove snapper and redfish on the mangrove islands. Snook are getting to the beaches and passes for spawn. Bait has been plentiful and the fish are fired up.

The spring bite is in full swing and the days of catching big powerful predators is back. Snook trout and redfish have been off the charts. At the same time tarpon are showing up in full force from their winter hiatus. Bait fish have been pretty easy to come by most mornings and these fish are ready and willing to eat every bait you put in their vicinity.

Recent trips have produced some quality snook and trout, and some Spanish mackerel are showing up also. We have been using artificial lures and live bait and doing very well. There are also some big redfish and huge snook cruising around the mangroves right now.

In like a lion out like a lamb, the month of March is certainly living up to its reputation. We have had water temperatures sore into the 80s, then right back down into the 60s with the numerous fronts we have had. Cooler water means deeper areas for the snook, trout, and redfish inshore and spawning sheepshead and snapper on our Tampa Bay rock piles. With some site fishing for Cobia on the calm days tomorrow we're heading out to the Gulf of America for a little bottom fishing and to see if the kingfish are here yet. Let's get...

George was a great Captain, he was knowable of the area and very professional! He made my request for my wife who has never caught a slot red or a snook come true she actually caught both. George was a good conversationalist and after talking with him and sharing some stories, we found out he is really a good guy and we will use him again. Great day on the water, Thanks again Captain George!

Trip: Tampa Bay Inshore Fishing Fun!!!

Steven was a great captain! We first went bait fishing and caught some good fish, didn’t happen to catch any sharks this time but still had a great time seeing a hammerhead shark, stingrays, dolphins, and amber schools. It was a super fun trip and I highly recommend Steven as he seems to know the area and how to fish it very well.

We had the best trip ever, captain john was so funny and was teaching us the ways of the bay. Ended up catching about 15-20 fish each between me and my dad. After the trip we were so pumped and hyped just thinking about all the catches. I highly recommend captain john for your next charter in Tampa Bay. 10/10 on the entire trip and the experience!!! Love that this charter is veteran owned as well, being active duty myself, I felt very comfortable and the vibes were immaculate. The boat was super clean and everything was organized which was helpful while out on the water. Please book with John!!!

Captain Steven is the real deal. We had a party of 4 and none of us had been on an ocean charter before and we all wanted to catch some sharks. Steven put us on a load of bull sharks, we each caught a shark, the biggest of the 4 sharks being about 5.5ft long. He’s great at instructing and demonstrating everything, he’s great with novice fishermen, and he’s a fun guy to be around. He will put you on some fish.

Captain Brian and Captain Gerry were great! Great conversation and knows their stuff. We booked a 4 hour trip. Safety is priority and a storm was rolling in, so we had to head back after 2 hours. However, it passed after 30-45 minutes and we went back out. They took us to 4-5 different spots and we caught over 10 species of fish! Flounder, grouper, spades, sheeps head, lady fish, trout, silvers, mackerel, jack, pin, mangrove snapper, puffer. Many we had to release because they weren’t in season or were juveniles. However, the ones we did keep, the captains cleaned up for us. Overall, had a wonderful time. 10/10
