Over the last several weeks we have seen an awesome bite of Sheepshead and Redfish. There have been a lot of upperslot redfish in the 24-27 inch range too. The sheepshead fishing has been steady near the inlets in our area with a wide variety in sizes. Our baits of choice lately have been fiddler crabs, sand fleas, and live Shrimp. I like to mix some cut mullet into the day on key spots to target Redfish. As the New Year begins I am preparing to target the same two species I spoke about above but typically see a few...

As the New Year begins I am preparing to target the same two species I spoke about above but typically see a few other species regularly like Seatrout and black drum. Although some days are cold to us the fish love it here in the winter.

Redfish are on fire..... I've got schools of red at the north end of my region to the south end. Also the south end is also productive with sheephead. We've been catching redfish on everything from live bait to lures.

Hooked up on my old school sliding float rig at 12 ft. With live shrimp. Fishing around docks in a lot of current. We've gotten to the boat before, but all four were lost, probably 15 to 20 lb redfish. We ended up leaving there with a bunch of small Mangrove snappers that we didn't keep.
Hit the marsh creeks, and cast live shrimp on jig heads. And finished the day up with a 25-in red fish and a 20 inch redfish

Winter fishing continues to be strong. The slot redfish continue to be active and the sheepshead bite has picked up. While the total fish counts are less than summer, the caught fish are larger and frequently keeper size.

• Sheepshead: This is the star of the show right now. As the water cools, "convicts" are moving onto dock pilings, bridge footings (especially the Matlacha Bridge), and oyster bars. Use small pieces of fresh shrimp or fiddler crabs on a #1 or 1/0 circle hook.
• Redfish: Look for "tailers" on the shallow flats during the low afternoon tides. With negative tides predicted around midday, focus on the edges of deep-water creeks and mangrove shorelines.

• Trout: Seatrout are scattered across the 3- to 5-foot grassy flats. Drifting with a popping cork and live shrimp or slow-working a soft
plastic paddle tail is the most consistent way to find them.
• Snook: Most snook have retreated into the warmer backcountry canals and up the Caloosahatchee River. They are a bit lethargic due to the temp drop, so slow down your presentation.

Merry Christmas to all!

Sheepshead fishing has been picking up on the nearshore rocks. Live shrimp and fiddler crabs will get them to eat. Black bass, grunts and Spanish mackerel are also on the rocks. Inshore, the water has cooled and the reds and trout are moving to the creeks and rivers. Some black drum and mangrove snapper are in the deeper holes of the creeks. There has been very little water due to extreme low tides and a persistent east wind, thus most of the fishing is in the main river and nearshore rocks recently.
