Happy Day Today. Deep sea fishing report for 52′ Hatteras sportfish located at Bahia Mar in Fort Lauderdale.
Sailfishing in Fort Lauderdale is a popular activity, especially during the winter months when sailfish migrate through the area in large numbers. Fort Lauderdale is known as the “Sailfish Capital of the World” due to the abundance of sailfish in its waters. An angler can experience multiple sailfish when fishing in Fort Lauderdale.
These acrobatic fish are prized for their fighting ability and are released after being caught to preserve the population and due to conservation has been continually growing.
Sailfish are abundant in Fort Lauderdale’s waters January through May. This is when the sailfish migrate through the area in large numbers. Sailfish tent to congregate near underwater structures, reefs, drop-offs, and current edges. We catch sailfish in water depths ranging from 100 to 300feet, where sailfish are known to feed. Of course we catch them in shallower water and out many miles in the very deep water, however the sweet spot is from 100-300. Trolling is an effective method for targeting sailfish using rigged ballyhoo, mullet, or strip baits. Troll these baits behind the boat at varying depths and distances until you get a strike.
Kite fishing and live baits are highly effective and one of the most popular methods. Popular choices include goggle eye, pilchards, blue runners and herring.
Many anglers use teasers which are artificial or natural baits rigged to attract sailfish to the surface.

Here are a verity of depths and big fish. 🎣 unfortunately I don't have any measurements of the fish. All are species I often catch, so I can say they are waaayy above average sized. The Mahi was on a slow slow day. 3hrs of trolling on our 35' Carolina Classic without a bite. Just as we were planning to "switch gears" and anchor up for some bottom fishing, we spotted one lone frigate bird. 🦅 as we passed under the bird, our downrigger got slammed. Its first run was long and fast, we immediately assumed it was a wahoo. Our angler jumped up from half napping position and started cranking. After fighting for about 15min I got a glimpse of color from the bridge, it was one of the biggest bull mahis I've ever seen. Gaf shot from our mate Sam was perfect, and so were the tacos. One of my life long best friends was visiting key west and helping me with some boat and home maintenance. Luckily one of his last days in town, we had a perfect (2mph wind) day. We could not pass up the opportunity to run out deep. After some adjustments to our bottom reader we started marking fish on the bottom in 900'. Tommy attached the gator clips to 12v and down went the big lead to the bottom. Almost immediately our rod bent over and we knew it was the one we wanted. It was not the subtle bite we often see. After watching the electric reel do all the work, we got beautiful golden reflection of this massive golden tile.

The Dodo was my second that day out of Buena Vista on the East Cape. The other was 26 kilos this guy was 32 kilos. Big day small boat. The Bluefin I caught, handlined and gaffed solo. It was in November off San Clemente on the kite Flyer rig. 5th blowup finally stuck. It was hot but the owner was happy and called it a day to celebrate Lee side of Catalina. I wanted to get a few more but the bite was off the next morning. Gotta hit while the iron is hot
