We booked this guided fishing trip for our family (two sons, grandson, niece, and nephew) hoping for a fun day on the water. Instead, it turned into one of the most unpleasant and disappointing experiences we’ve ever had — and cost us far more than just money.

Our sons drove 5 hours from Waco, and we drove 2.5 hours from San Antonio. We rented an Airbnb for $1,100 so we could drive up Friday night for the Saturday morning 6:30am trip. The original captain wasn’t available, so they “salvaged” the trip by assigning us another captain. That decision turned into a nightmare.

From the very beginning, the replacement captain was rude and dismissive. Parking instructions were unclear, and when we asked for clarification, he responded with sarcasm. Boarding the airboat required us to remove shoes and wade barefoot through water, something we weren’t told in advance. Instead of being helpful, the guide mocked us for struggling to get on board.

Throughout the trip, he made constant “smart-aleck” comments to both adults and kids, including telling one child “this isn’t a playground” when they simply stood near the front of the boat. He bragged about “becoming a Marine to be an asshole” and unfortunately, he lived up to that statement. He had no people skills, no effort to make the trip enjoyable, and no respect for paying customers.

One of the worst moments came when he reeled in a fish himself even though we had youth (ages 13–15) eager to participate. He admitted he knew it was just a hardhead, but instead of letting one of the kids enjoy the experience, he took the rod, caught the fish, and then proceeded to beat it in the head with pliers before throwing it back. Not only did the kids have to watch him unnecessarily mutilate the fish, they also had to watch it struggle in the water for half an hour. It was another example of us paying to sit there and watch him fish rather than the family we brought for the trip.

All he talked about during the trip was “good luck” and “bad luck” and how everything had to be done “his way.” We were out for four hours, caught just 4 fish, and only 4 of us even got to touch a rod. Two family members never fished at all, while the guide himself fished during the first part of the trip as we sat and watched. That was especially frustrating since this trip was meant for the kids.

When you add it all up $1,100 for the Airbnb, $926.50 for the charter, 7+ hours of driving, and all the effort to make this weekend happen the disappointment is beyond words. It wasn’t just wasted money, it was wasted time and a ruined family memory.

Bottom line: This was by far the worst guided trip we’ve ever taken. The captain was rude, unprofessional, and even cruel in front of children. Save yourself the money, the travel, and the heartache book with literally anyone else.

He did a great job at helping our kids learn how to bay fish which is different from bass fishing. He was patient with everyone and super helpful. Highly recommend calling on captain Brian if your interested in a guide and have kiddos.
