Dunedin Fishing Overview

Dunedin, FL is a prime vacation destination with stunning white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters. For fishing enthusiasts, this area is a must-visit location, with access to abundant flats, Saint Joseph Sound, Old Tampa Bay, and the Gulf of Mexico, all teeming with a diverse range of fish species.

Inshore fishing in Dunedin offers a thrilling experience, with opportunities to catch Redfish, Spotted Seatrout, Tarpon, Snook, Black Drum, Flounder, and Mackerel. The Old Tampa Bay is also a great spot for nearshore and inshore fishing, with a variety of fish species including Black Drum, Pompano, Permit, and other local favorites.

Venturing out into the Gulf of Mexico offers even more exciting fishing opportunities, with trolling for King and Spanish Mackerel en route to offshore reefs where Amberjack, Grouper, and Snapper can be found. For those seeking a trophy catch, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Sailfish, and even Blue Marlin can be found 60 or more miles offshore.

Dunedin fishing charters can organize any type of fishing trip, from targeting giant Grouper to catching Snapper for a delicious dinner, or even landing an Inshore Slam with your family. It is important to note that solo anglers should be aware of current regulations and license requirements, while those fishing with a licensed charter will not need a saltwater fishing license. Dunedin, FL is a top destination for anglers from all over the country, offering fantastic action on the water and unforgettable catches.

Inshore Fishing in Dunedin, Florida

Dunedin has biodiverse inshore waters that are home to an array of sought after fish species. In the spring and summer months, tarpon stop by on their southern migration chasing food and warmer water. They are followed by snook moving into the warmer bay waters to hunt. In the summer and fall redfish move through the bays and channels into the flats to spawn which is the perfect time to catch a giant.

As the waters cool down, Speckled Trout, Flounder, and Grouper species can be expected. Fish the best Dunedin fishing spots like Caladesi Island and Honeymoon Island or cruise the bays, backwaters, and bayous for mangrove monsters. Regardless of the time of year, your Dunedin fishing charter will ensure that you stay on the bite.

Dunedin Deep Sea Fishing

Dunedin's deep sea fishing is not to be overlooked. Much like inshore fishing, seasonality is not an issue: the fish are biting all year, but target species typically change with the season. Depending on which species are in season, various species of Snapper, Grouper, Shark and Tuna can be expected.

When the fall months come around and the water temperature begins cooling, schools of baitfish head south for warmer waters. Trailing behind them are Kingfish, the prize jewel of Dunedin fishing. These streamlined predators are often likened to a torpedo because of their shape and speed. Kingfish can be found in large numbers corralling baitfish in shallow structure, along the shore, or prowling around deep water wrecks for their next meal. Trolling bait fish tends to be the most productive technique for catching these beasts.

Other Things to do in Dunedin

Apart from the world-class inshore fishing, productive offshore waters and award-winning white sand beaches, there are plenty of events and activities to provide entertainment off the water. Take a break from the fishing and visit the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, or for those 21+ choose from a number of micro-breweries, bars and nightclubs. In early November, head just south of Dunedin to Madiera Beach for the biggest Kingfish tournament in the world, Old Salt's King of the Beach. Head to Clearwater or east to the bustling metropolis of Tampa. There is no shortage of fun to be had in Dunedin, on or off the water.

We all had a great time during the fishing trip. We caught quite a few fish that we got to keep. The deck hand was on top of his game and took good care of us as we were catching fish. The Captain had a cooler of water, a bathroom on board and cleaned all of our fish for us. My daughter and I got a little sea sick but we all had a great time regardless.

What an awesome trip! Captain Brad is super knowledgeable and was a great help with not only the typical trivia questions but tips and tricks on techniques and your style of fishing. He was willing to work with me on getting a variety of fish but also taking the time to get a tarpon, which was well worth the wait. He was a great coach during the long battle and would've lost it if it weren't for him. The boat was great and would work well for a smaller group. Overall was a fantastic trip. Ill be sure to book Captain Brad again next time I'm in the area.

We had a great fishing trip in Clearwater Florida. Our captains (Brett and Luke) were very nice and knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend Brett and Luke. They put us on some King Mackerel that fought like crazy. It was a lot of fun. Ask for Captain Brad.

Bad weather plagued our trip. A big fog bank rolled in on us. Caught a few but it could have been better. I saw no other boats catching fish either. Chris knows his stuff and I'm booking a Tarpon trip with him next month.

The trip I had with Captain Roy was amazing! Being from out of town he was very helpful because I'm used to fishing for pan fish and fishing in Florida is a little different then that. My buddy, his 6 year old son, and I all had a lot of laughs and caught some fish. Caught my biggest fish and got to see a dolphin swimming around our boat. I'll definitely be planning on another trip with Captain Roy.
