About Your Trip

If you’re looking to battle hard-fighting pelagics and explore some of the most productive inshore waters around Cape Town, Captain Byron has you covered. Departing from Simon’s Town and Granger Bay, these half and full day inshore trips put you right in the middle of the action, whether you’re chasing fast-moving schools close to shore or working deeper reef structure for prized bottom species.

With over 40 years of experience fishing off Cape Town—and decades
as a licensed skipper—Captain Byron brings an unmatched level of knowledge and passion to every trip. He’s earned multiple South African and All Africa records, along with a World Record, but these days his biggest thrill comes from helping anglers of all experience levels hook into quality fish. From first-timers to seasoned pros, everyone is welcome aboard.

On a half day trip, you’ll focus on maximizing the bite during prime windows, often targeting aggressive Yellowtail and Snoek feeding close to shore. These fish are powerful, fast, and known for blistering runs that will test both your tackle and your reflexes. If you opt for a full day inshore adventure, you’ll have the added flexibility to explore a wider range of grounds—from the reefs off Cape Point to waters near Robben Island in the Atlantic or False Bay in the Indian Ocean. This extended time allows you to chase a broader variety of species and adjust to conditions for the best possible action.

Depending on the season and location, you may target Geelbek (Cape Salmon), Kob, Red Roman (Snapper), Red Grouper, Bonito, Rockfish, Atlantic Mackerel, Black Bream, Hottentot, Squid, and more. From trolling for pelagics to bottom fishing productive reefs, Captain Byron tailors the approach to what’s biting. Light tackle keeps things sporty, and jigging is an option if you bring your own specialized gear. Traditional handline fishing is also available for those who want a more classic experience.

You’ll be fishing aboard a fully refurbished 18’ Ace Craft powered by twin 100 HP Yamaha engines, capable of cruising up to 30 knots to get you to the grounds quickly and safely. The vessel is SAMSA surveyed and approved, equipped with modern GPS and fishfinding electronics to dial in on bait and structure, and stocked with quality Shimano rods and reels. An ice box keeps your catch fresh, and a first mate is onboard to assist throughout the trip. All conventional tackle, bait, and lures are included, and the crew will clean and fillet any fish you’re keeping for your own enjoyment.

Families are more than welcome, and Captain Byron especially enjoys teaching younger anglers not only how to fish, but how to respect and care for the ocean and its ecosystems. Whether you choose a half day to squeeze in some high-energy action or a full day to fully explore these legendary waters, you can expect an exciting, hands-on experience led by one of Cape Town’s most accomplished captains.
