About Your Trip

This is the time of year for trophy Lake Trout and the Lake Michigan fishing grounds will not disappoint. Join us for a 10-15 mile journey offshore in search of Lake Michigan's most iconic species, the Lake Trout. Native to Lake Michigan, this is the lakes most sought after fish. From mid September to late October, these fish are in a feeding frenzy in the offshore waters. While limits are not guaranteed, they are almost always achieved. The size of these fish is also worth noting. The average fish will range from 5-15lbs with the big ones breaking the 20-30lb mark!

The limit on these fish is 2 per person. We will fish for either 8 hours or until the limit is reached, whichever comes first. The "spot" is about an hour boat ride each way. We only run one of these trips a day so the start time is a bit later than usual. Enjoy sleeping in a bit, enjoy a nice boat ride to the fishing grounds while you drink your morning coffee (or beer) and prepare for some sore arms after reeling in a limit of big trout. This opportunity only comes around a few weeks a year so it is important to take advantage and get out there!

Founded by Captain Josh in 2015, Bama Breeze is a premier Lake Michigan charter fishing operation. Moored at North Point Marina in Winthrop Harbor, Illinois, just 45 minutes north of Chicago, the Bama Breeze runs salmon and trout charters from April through October aboard a 40-foot sport fisherman.

A lifelong Illinois resident and Midwest outdoorsman, Cpt. Josh is a long-standing professional in the outdoors industry, having served as Head of Operations and COO for notable brands like Mystery Tackle Box and Googan Squad. Monday through Friday he maintains a professional corporate life, but come the weekend, you'll find him behind the helm of the Bama Breeze doing what he loves most. Whether it's a bachelor party, a family outing, a corporate event, or a serious trophy fish hunt, Cpt. Josh and his crew are focused on putting you on fish and making sure you have a great time doing it.

How did you get started guiding?

My dad was a part-time guide. When he passed while I was in college, I had to make the decision to either get into guiding to pay for our boat or sell the boat. I chose the boat.

What makes you different from other guides?

I do this for fun. I have a corporate career Mon-Fri 9-5. I choose to spend my weekends on the water showing people what Lake Michigan has to offer because I enjoy it.

Guests should bring the following: Illinois Fishing License & Salmon Stamp (can be purchased online while on boat), Sunglasses, Hat, and Sunscreen, Warm Clothing and Raingear, Soft Sole Shoes (tennis, deck shoes), Small Cooler with ice for your food & refreshments, Camera for great memories, Large cooler to bring fish home (keep in your vehicle).

You'll need to buy a fishing license before getting out there. Find out more about licenses here.

We use a cashless autopay system. We'll send you a boarding pass, and on the day of the trip, your guide will scan your boarding pass to automatically transfer the remaining balance. The only cash needed is to tip your guide (we recommend 20%).

Cancel for free up to 14 days before the trip and receive credit back to your account. Cancelling within 14 of the trip will forfeit your deposit to the guide. Day-of cancellations and no-shows will be charged the full balance of the trip to their card.

In the event of inclement weather you'll be covered by out 100% Weather Guarantee and will not lose your deposit.

In the event of inclement weather, our guides will check the conditions and make the final call on whether its safe to go on the trip. If they decide the trip needs to be postponed, we'll work closely with you to reschedule or provide a credit for the full deposit, which can be applied to any of our trips in the US and beyond.

Each trip's price is determined by the guide and reflects all associated costs. A significant factor in pricing is often the type of boat and the corresponding fuel expenses. Additional costs may include leases, marina or slip fees, and the expenses involved in providing and maintaining the necessary gear for your trip.
