About Your Trip

Get ready to explore the pristine waters of the Upper Laguna Madre and Texas Coastal Bend with a fly fishing adventure like no other! Whether you’re a seasoned angler or just starting out, this trip offers the perfect opportunity to experience some of the most remote and untouched flats Texas has to offer, with Redfish, Black Drum, and Spotted Sea Trout leading the charge.

The Experience:
Step aboard a sleek and quiet poling skiff for
a day of sight casting and shallow water action. These waters are legendary among fly anglers for their crystal-clear flats and abundant fishery, making it the ideal playground for targeting hard-fighting Redfish. While Reds are the main event, don’t be surprised if you get a shot at Black Drum, Flounder, Sheepshead, or even the occasional Spotted Sea Trout. Every cast is a chance at a thrilling hookup.

Half-day trips kick off at 9am, giving you five full hours of exciting action before returning to the dock with plenty of time to relax. For those looking to fully immerse themselves, the full-day option offers 8-10 hours of fishing bliss. Depart early, return late, and maximize your time exploring this fly fishing paradise. A sack lunch can be provided for $15 per angler, or feel free to bring your own snacks and drinks. Water and ice are included to keep you hydrated throughout the day.

What You’ll Learn:
Your guide is not just here to help you land fish—though that’s definitely part of the plan! This trip is also a chance to deepen your understanding of fly fishing techniques and the unique ecosystem of the Texas coast. Whether it’s improving your casting, learning to read the water, or understanding the behavior of target species, every moment on the water is tailored to your skill level. Beginners and experts alike will feel right at home.

The Setup:
We’ll be fishing exclusively with fly tackle, and you’re welcome to bring your own gear if you have a favorite setup. Otherwise, your guide has everything covered, from rods and reels to expertly tied flies. For flats fishing, expect to use 7-9wt rods with weight-forward floating lines. If we venture near the beachfront or jetties (depending on conditions), heavier 10-12wt setups may come into play. Don’t worry about flies—I’ve got a handpicked selection designed to tempt even the pickiest fish.

One angler fishes at a time to ensure a smooth and safe experience. After all, swinging fly rods in close quarters is a bit like "sword fighting in a phone booth!" This means you’ll get personalized attention and a shot at perfecting your cast while your partner enjoys the stunning views and wildlife of the flats.

What to Bring:
Here’s what you’ll need to make the most of your day on the water:

A valid Texas saltwater or all-water fishing license
Polarized sunglasses with bronze or copper lenses (Smith ChromaPop lenses are highly recommended)
Weather-appropriate clothing and a packable rain jacket
Non-marking shoes or wading booties if you prefer to step into the flats
A reusable water bottle
Your own snacks or lunch (or let us know if you'd like us to provide lunch for $15/angler)
Your guide will supply all the rods, reels, tackle, flies, cold storage, and even sunscreen (lotion-based only). The boat is equipped with dry storage for your gear and valuables, so you can focus on fishing without a worry.

Why This Trip?
Fishing the Upper Laguna Madre and Texas Coastal Bend isn’t just about catching fish—it’s about the adventure of it all. From stalking tailing Reds in gin-clear water to marveling at the unique beauty of the Texas flats, this trip is a one-of-a-kind experience. It’s perfect for fly anglers looking to sharpen their skills, connect with nature, and target bucket-list species in a breathtaking environment.

So, pack your gear (and your sense of adventure), and get ready for an unforgettable day on the Texas coast. Whether it’s your first time with a fly rod or you’re a seasoned pro, this trip promises memories that’ll keep you coming back for more. Let’s hit the water!

Independent Guide
My name is Capt. Brendan Heselton, I’m a Texas coast fly fishing guide based out of Corpus Christi, specializing in sight fishing for redfish. I've been guiding between the Texas Coast and Bristol Bay, Alaska since 2020. In 2023 I decided to start Nueces Angling Co., my own guide service. I spend October - June guiding fly fishing and light tackle trips at home in Texas, while my summers are spent guiding at the world famous Tikchik Narrows Lodge in the heart of Western Alaska. In addition to guiding I also provide 1 on 1 casting instruction and I'm a small batch commercial fly tier. I've proudly been a Guide Ambassador for TU's Save Bristol Bay campaign since 2021 and I'm a NOLS certified Wilderness First Responder.

Corpus Christi is centrally located on the Laguna Madre’s endless miles of crystal clear grass and sand flats where we can target redfish and black drum, with occasional shots at spotted sea trout, flounder, and sheepshead. Nestled between Padre Island and the mainland, the Laguna Madre is home to more finfish than anywhere else on the Texas coast. It’s a major stop for migratory birds, hosting 75% of the redhead duck population in the winter, and it’s one of the wildest places I’ve experienced outside of Alaska.

My goal is to provide a memorable, safe, and educational day on the water where my guests walk away with a better understanding of fly fishing, and a deeper appreciation for the fishery I love.
