About Your Trip

Get ready to experience some of the best salmon and steelhead fishing in Southern Oregon with Captain Joel. With decades of experience on these waters, Joel knows exactly where to go and what techniques to use to put you on fish. Whether you're after powerful Chinook, acrobatic steelhead, or a mix of both, you’ll be fishing some of the region’s top rivers, including the Coquille River, the Rogue River, Rogue River Bay, the Upper Rogue, and the South Umpqua. Each of these waterways offers incredible fishing opportunities throughout the year, from the famous spring Chinook run on the Rogue to the aggressive winter steelhead of the South Umpqua.

Winter steelhead fishing kicks off at the beginning of December and runs through May 1st, offering some of the most exciting action of the year. These powerful fish are aggressive biters and relentless fighters, making for an unforgettable experience on the water. Whether you’re side-drifting, bobber-doggin’, or running plugs, Captain Joel will have you dialed in on the best techniques to hook into these prized fish. When September rolls around, the focus shifts to fall Chinook, as massive kings push into the rivers fresh from the ocean. These salmon are known for their brute strength and hard runs, providing an adrenaline-pumping fight in the Rogue River Bay and surrounding waterways.

Your trip will be tailored to the river and season, with Joel selecting the best techniques to maximize your chances of success. You might be running plugs for fall Chinook, side-drifting for winter steelhead, or even trying your hand at fly fishing. No matter your experience level, Joel provides top-tier instruction to ensure you’re set up for success. You’ll be fishing from one of his two top-of-the-line boats, either the 17’ Willie Drift Boat, complete with a heater, comfortable seats, and even a pizza oven for warm meals on the water, or the 24’ Willie Raptor Jet Sled, built for covering more ground and handling larger groups.

Everything you need for a productive day is included, from premium G-Loomis IMX rods paired with Shimano, Daiwa, or Abu Garcia reels to high-quality Beckman fishing nets and all necessary bait and tackle. Just bring your Oregon fishing license, dress for the weather, and pack your favorite food and drinks. Responsible alcohol consumption is permitted, and if you’re fishing from the drift boat, you even have the option to cook a meal on board.

No matter the season, Captain Joel is ready to take you on an unforgettable fishing adventure through some of Oregon’s most scenic and productive rivers. Book your trip today and get ready to chase some of the finest salmon and steelhead the Pacific Northwest has to offer!

About Your Guide

Joel G.

For over three decades I have been fishing the pristine waters of Western Oregon. When I was five years old I caught my first salmon in Tillamook Bay. Since then fishing has been a very big part of my life. I spent my early years fishing the Willamette and Tillamook river systems with my uncle who taught me nearly everything I know about fishing. My family moved to the Rogue Valley in 1993 when I was 11 years old. Shortly after our move my dad bought a new Willie drift boat and immediately began learning the Rogue River. Since then I have spent countless hours learning to fish the waters of Southwest Oregon.
