About Your Trip

Set out from Quepos with Captain Melvin and experience the thrill of offshore fishing in one of the world’s most legendary sportfishing destinations. With a warm, easygoing approach and decades of experience on the water, Captain Melvin knows how to create the perfect trip for anglers of all levels—especially families. He’s passionate about getting kids hooked early, so don’t hesitate to bring the whole crew along. Just make sure children wear life vests; you can check ahead to confirm available sizes.

You’ll fish aboard a 24’ center console that comfortably accommodates up to four guests. This boat is equipped with all the essentials—from GPS and fishfinder to quality rods, reels, and lures. Live bait is often included, though sometimes you'll get to catch it yourself, adding another layer of excitement to the day. A bilingual First Mate will be on board to assist throughout the trip, helping with everything from baiting hooks to cleaning your catch at the end of the day. Tipping the mate 10–20% is customary and always appreciated.

Trips run six to eight hours, giving you plenty of time to chase big offshore targets like Mahi Mahi, Sailfish, Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna, and all three Marlin species—Blue, Black, and Striped. Whether you're trolling, jigging, spinning, popping, or even trying your hand at fly fishing, Captain Melvin has the techniques and tackle dialed in. You’ll spend the day working the productive waters off Costa Rica’s central coast, enjoying the scenery and the nonstop action along the way.

Each trip includes fresh fruit, snacks, and a selection of drinks including water, soda, and beer. On longer outings, lunch is also provided—typically sandwiches, salad, and chicken to keep you going strong. While the basics are covered, it’s a good idea to bring your own hat, polarized sunglasses, and reef-safe sunscreen. Alcohol is allowed in moderation, but skip the hard liquor and glass bottles for safety.

As a heads up if you are looking to flyfish, rentals for the equipment are extra. Before your trip, make sure everyone in your group secures a local fishing license. These are usually available online or the captain can help guide you through the process. With top-tier fishing, a knowledgeable crew, and a comfortable setup, a day on the water with Captain Melvin offers the ideal mix of adventure and relaxation.
