The bull redfish are in! The mullet run is in full swing and the bite has been pretty hot from the flats to the beach. We are targeting bull redfish on the flats with light tackle in some areas and there is a consistent bull red bite in the inter coastal and around the jetties. Some snook are in the mix and a good number of tarpon are crashing amongst the schools of mullet. Back in the flats schools of small 5-10 pound black drum are present and they should be consistent throughout the fall.

Mosquito Lagoon is a one of a kind estuary where the Red Fish spend their entire life. Unlike regular reds that migrate and go offshore to breed this particular type is born here and spends its entire life here. With the loss of habitat in the past 8 years the numbers have been going down significantly which is why the catch and release only regulations for the entire Indian River system.

The tarpon bite is at its peak, or very close to it, for the season here in new Smyrna beach. Targeting tarpon off the beach we are catching Bonita, jacks, and kingfish as well. Inshore we are getting some adult tarpon as well as great numbers of medium (22"-26") snook as well as some over slots. Moving farther into the back country the sightfishing for redfish is already getting better and the forecast for the fall/winter is looking stellar. Wetter you want to chase giant tarpon off the beach or sight fish redfish and snook. It's a great time to...

While the fishing for Bull Reds hasn't been what was expected this time of year the other species have been really active. Night fishing at the causeways has been good for Snook with an occasional Red. I had a charter with international customers following Icast last week and they caught 19 species. One was the monster Barracuda which ate another one which was a permit the customer had battled for 5 minutes and had to the boat twice before it became bait. The reds have been there during prime tide times. Still getting some slot size reds in the lagoon...

The redfish bite is on fire in the morning using live mud minnows, live pinfish and cut bait around the mangrove islands on the incoming tide.
The trout bite is still in 9ft to 10ft of water on spotty bottom. Use shrimp on a Jighead and soft plastics on quarter ounce Jigheads.
We have been getting our limit of redfish and trout before noon this week get out early and bet the heat.

Welcome to July!
It has been hot here in the Nature Coast. Thank goodness scallop season is here. If tides permit, you may be able to pry a redfish or two off the mangrove shorelines before the water warms up. Snook are around as well and a well placed free-lined pin fish under the mangroves can entice them to play. Offshore, there are still cobia on the deeper rocks and wrecks. There has been some " gumbo" that has been on the 20-25 foot range that has slowed the grouper / snapper bite down. Add a full moon and it...

has been tough to put together a good cooler lately. Scallops have been good, bad and sometimes non-existent. We have been getting them in 4-5 feet of water on the incoming tide. They are smaller but that should improve as the season progresses. The high tide is is in the morning this week so that will help those trying to get a few reds before cooling off in the gulf.

First charter experience and wasn’t sure what we’d get on a cold December day but Brad delivered. He was prepared and ready to go and we had a shark on the boat in the first 10 minutes. Brad and Ryan were great and we had over a dozen sharks of multiple breeds in the few hours we were out. Great experience and we will look to use Brad again in the future.

Taylor was a great captain who was a joy to fish with and put us on the fish. He's an easy going guy who, despite being a younger captain, already has considerable experience in Mosquito Lagoon. He was right on time, the boat was clean and well-organized, and spotted so many fish for us. Taylor is your secret weapon in the Lagoon.
