Mosquito Lagoon is a one of a kind estuary where the Red Fish spend their entire life. Unlike regular reds that migrate and go offshore to breed this particular type is born here and spends its entire life here. With the loss of habitat in the past 8 years the numbers have been going down significantly which is why the catch and release only regulations for the entire Indian River system.

The tarpon bite is at its peak, or very close to it, for the season here in new Smyrna beach. Targeting tarpon off the beach we are catching Bonita, jacks, and kingfish as well. Inshore we are getting some adult tarpon as well as great numbers of medium (22"-26") snook as well as some over slots. Moving farther into the back country the sightfishing for redfish is already getting better and the forecast for the fall/winter is looking stellar. Wetter you want to chase giant tarpon off the beach or sight fish redfish and snook. It's a great time to...

The bite has been good early and late. Summer time pattern so get out early or late afternoon just before dark. Coordinate with the tides. Outgoing early and incoming late is best for reds and trout. It's a new moon so the tides will be strong. We've been experiencing low low tides the last few weeks with a west to south west wind that's pushing the water out. Hit the creeks and flats early in the falling tide and you should do well on the reds, drum and flounder.
Shrimp are still the bait of choice but the mullet run...

Shrimp are still the bait of choice but the mullet run
will kick off in the next few weeks so expect a shift in baits. Black drum, flounder and trout can be found in deep corners along the creek bends with a strong current on jigheads or circle hooks with a small splitshot .

While the fishing for Bull Reds hasn't been what was expected this time of year the other species have been really active. Night fishing at the causeways has been good for Snook with an occasional Red. I had a charter with international customers following Icast last week and they caught 19 species. One was the monster Barracuda which ate another one which was a permit the customer had battled for 5 minutes and had to the boat twice before it became bait. The reds have been there during prime tide times. Still getting some slot size reds in the lagoon...

Found Captain Clay through CaptainExperiences just a few days before trip and he was a lifesaver. We had a “bragging rights” fishing tourney and he put us on the fish. Won first place individual when he found the flounder! Great experience, local knowledge of where the fish are! Highly recommend

Our outing with Nick was very enjoyable. He was professional, courteous and a pleasure to be with. He put us on fish and we had a good time on our 4 hr trip. I would recommend him to anyone looking for a charter on the Atlantic coast. We will use Nick again.
