A few Atlantic bonita still linger around at Wrightsville beach. Spanish mackerel fishing is as strong as new rope. Plenty for everyone but, fish are mostly on the smaller side. The first few flounder of the year have been getting caught mostly on plastics while trout fishing. Speckled trout fishing is pretty good right now with a chance of catching a very big female. Keeping them is discouraged, but for the person that loves a chance at a big one, spend your time early on top water in the next several weeks. Red drum are starting to bite better up and down the inter coastal waterway and near shore creeks, with the coming of the the mullet run that usually kicks off in late May or June. You can expect it to get really good once the bait come down the waterway. There will be great catch and release fishing for flounder and people who do not care to take fish home. King mackerel fishing should pick up in the next several weeks along near shore beaches and with the hopes of big menhaden schools on the beach. There could be good cobia opportunity.

Even with the crazy weather patterns, the fish are doing their thing and pretty much getting in their spring patterns. May is here and hopefully the weather will level out and get more consistent. Spotted trout can be caught on the flats in 3’-6’ of water. The normal popping cork, 3’ mono leader and 1/8 oz jig head will do the trick. I usually use a Sea Shad by Bass Assassin but any bait with a swim action will work. Green Moon and Stinky Pink are normally my go to colors. However, lately, due to all the wind, the water has been a little stirred up. If the normal plastics are not getting it done, switch to Gulp Shrimp. When the water is dirty, the scent of the Gulp baits can improve the bite. Redfish are being a little inconsistent but that is just due to the weather. With the weather getting more consistent, the redfish bite will improve. For artificial bait, you can’t beat a gold spoon. I like the Aqua Dream brand spoon but there are plenty of other brands that will do the job. Spinnerbaits and chatterbaits will be good choices too. For live or cut bait, mullet is top on my list. My normal rig is a 3/8 or 1/2 ounce weight with a 4/0 or 5/0 circle hook. Mud minnows can be a game changer as well. Snook are showing up but the season will close May 1st. Catch and release only May 1-August 31. Get out on the water and have some fun with friends and family. Great friendships, connections and memories are made on the water.

The spring migration of bait and the gamefish that follow the bait as it influxes into the Lower Laguna Madre is starting now. Catching solid redfish and speckled trout on both artificial baits and fresh cut bait. The windier days in the spring can make for some productive redfish trips. That wind gets everything stirred up and those redfish get hungry. Catching speckled trout along shallow bars next to deeper water transitions, as the sun gets higher those specks will tend to move into adjacent deeper waters. Try natural looking plastics that resemble the real bait. Fresh ballyhoo and mullet cut up and pitched down wind are also producing some redfish action along the grass flats near South Padre Island.

The redfish bite has been on! Was using artificial baits until today, they started hitting live menhaden. The wind has been out of the east, it came around west/ northwest last night but it didn't seem to bother the bite. Here is a couple pictures from the last couple days.

Spring is king, but beach season is here as the gobbles wind down and crawfish disappear. It’s now time to turn on your Jimmy Buffet and Kenny Chesney playlist and comes sit on the world’s most beautiful beaches! Top water trout has really proven to be the best way to catch big keeper trout with this spring being especially good. Schooling reds in the shallows have been regular visitors by my boat but with ultra clear water they are turning their nose up at lots of baits. Over slot (over 27”) fish have been very available cruising the flats so expect a big fight when you can get one of these pumpkins to eat. We have lots to look forward too and it seems like this will be a summer to remember. So go grab a boat drink and a slice of key lime pie and come catch a few on the Emerald Coast.

The Trout and Pompano bite is hot! Clear clean water from the incoming tides bring the pomp's in hot around the passes, jetties and the beaches. The trout have been inshore on structure and really biting good when the water is moving. If the tide is coming in strong early in the mornings this is the best time to catch the bigger ones around structure. Tight lines and bent rods y'all!
