Booking a guide is also more cost effective, especially if you only get out a handful of times per year. Anglers targeting nearshore waters around the Dry Tortugas can expect to encounter species such as yellowtail snapper, grouper, and barracuda.

One effective technique for nearshore fishing in the Dry Tortugas is bottom fishing with live or dead bait. Live bait, such as pinfish or shrimp, can be used to attract species like grouper and snapper. Anglers often use a standard bottom rig, which includes a weight, a hook, and a leader line, to present the bait close to the ocean floor where these fish are feeding. This method is particularly successful around the numerous coral reefs and submerged structures that attract these fish.

Another popular method in the Dry Tortugas is drift fishing with artificial lures. Soft plastics, jigs, and spoons are effective for targeting species such as barracuda and snapper. Drift fishing involves moving with the current while casting and retrieving lures, which allows anglers to cover a wide area and locate fish that are actively feeding. Using a combination of different lures and varying retrieval speeds can help mimic the movement of prey and increase the chances of attracting a catch. The clear waters around the Dry Tortugas also make sight fishing a viable option for targeting species near the surface.

We had an absolutely amazing time deep sea fishing with Captain Anthony! He is a fun and knowledgeable fisherman with LOTS of experience and great stories (ask him about how he’d dive for lobsters to impress his dates). He does all the work but lets you learn and participate as much or as little as you want. We knew we had an expert when we heard the radio chatter of all the other guides complaining that nothing was biting, while we pulled in six (only four mahi in pic). The other two were a small tuna and a ~32” barracuda). We highly recommend Kilo Whiskey Charter & Captain Anthony!

Our guide Nick is top notch, he is friendly, knowledgeable and certainly knows great spots to fish. We caught fish all day, brought home three very large mutton’s, some other mutton’s and good size yellow tail. We caught and released fish all day, hogfish, large groupers and other assorted fishes. Thanks Nick .
