Everything to Know About Booking a Charleston bluefish fishing charter

What are the best bluefish fishing charters in Charleston?

What is bluefish in Charleston all about?

Bluefish are a popular and abundant species found in the coastal waters around Charleston, South Carolina. Known for their voracious feeding habits and aggressive strikes, bluefish provide exciting fishing opportunities for anglers of all skill levels. These fast-swimming predators are often found in nearshore waters, patrolling beaches, jetties, and tidal creeks in search of prey. Bluefish feed primarily on small fish such as mullet, menhaden, and anchovies, as well as crustaceans and squid, making them opportunistic hunters.

Fishing for bluefish in Charleston can be a thrilling experience, with anglers employing a variety of techniques to target these feisty fish. Casting or trolling with artificial lures such as spoons, plugs, or shiny metal jigs is a popular method for enticing bluefish strikes. These lures mimic the movement of injured baitfish, attracting the attention of hungry bluefish patrolling the area. Anglers can also use live bait such as mullet, menhaden, or shrimp to target bluefish, either by drifting with the current or fishing from anchored boats or piers.

Bluefish are present in Charleston's waters year-round, with peak fishing seasons typically occurring during the warmer months of the year. In spring and summer, bluefish migrate into nearshore waters in large numbers, providing anglers with ample opportunities to hook into these hard-fighting fish. During these seasons, bluefish can be found feeding aggressively on schools of baitfish, making them easier to locate and target. Whether fishing from the shore, a boat, or a kayak, anglers in Charleston can enjoy pursuing bluefish using a variety of techniques, adding excitement and adrenaline to their fishing adventures along the South Carolina coast.

What are the most popular months to fish for bluefish in Charleston?

Bluefish are present in the waters around Charleston, South Carolina, throughout much of the year, but their activity levels and abundance can vary with the seasons. Peak seasons for bluefish fishing in Charleston typically coincide with the warmer months, from late spring through early fall. During these times, water temperatures rise, and bluefish become more active and abundant in nearshore waters, making them more accessible targets for anglers exploring the coastal areas.

Late spring and summer are particularly productive seasons for targeting bluefish in Charleston's waters. As water temperatures increase, bluefish migrate into shallow coastal waters, where they feed voraciously on schools of baitfish and other prey. Anglers targeting bluefish during these seasons often find success casting or trolling nearshore, along beaches, jetties, and tidal creeks, where bluefish are known to congregate in search of food. These peak seasons provide anglers with prime opportunities to hook into bluefish and enjoy the thrilling fights they offer.

While bluefish can be encountered year-round in Charleston, anglers should be mindful of seasonal changes and environmental factors that may affect their behavior and distribution. Cooler water temperatures during the winter months may cause bluefish to migrate into deeper or warmer waters, making them less accessible to anglers fishing from the shore. By timing their trips to coincide with peak seasons and adapting their techniques to the conditions, anglers in Charleston can increase their chances of hooking into bluefish and enjoying memorable fishing experiences along the South Carolina coast.

What techniques are popular for catching bluefish in Charleston?

Fishing for bluefish in Charleston, South Carolina, offers anglers a variety of exciting techniques to target these voracious predators. One popular method is casting or trolling with artificial lures such as spoons, plugs, or shiny metal jigs. These lures mimic the movement of injured baitfish, attracting the attention of hungry bluefish patrolling the area. Anglers can cast these lures from the shore, piers, or boats, or troll them behind a slow-moving vessel to cover more water and locate actively feeding fish.

Another effective technique for targeting bluefish in Charleston is using live bait such as mullet, menhaden, or shrimp. Anglers can rig up live bait on a hook and weight and present it near the surface or along the bottom, depending on the depth at which the bluefish are feeding. Drifting with the current or anchoring near areas with concentrations of baitfish can increase the chances of enticing bluefish to bite. This method is particularly effective when bluefish are actively feeding on schools of baitfish, offering anglers a thrilling and productive fishing experience.

Bluefish are known for their aggressive strikes and powerful fights, making them a favorite target among anglers seeking adrenaline-pumping action. Whether casting from the shore, trolling from a boat, or drifting with live bait, anglers in Charleston can enjoy pursuing bluefish using a variety of techniques tailored to their preferences and expertise. With their abundance and accessibility in nearshore waters, bluefish provide anglers with plenty of opportunities to hook into these hard-fighting fish and enjoy memorable fishing adventures along the South Carolina coast.

What other species are popular in Charleston?

Aside from targeting bluefish, anglers in Charleston, South Carolina, have a diverse array of species to pursue, ensuring exciting fishing opportunities along the coast. One popular catch in the area is the spotted seatrout, valued for its spirited fights and delicious meat. Spotted seatrout are commonly found in marshes, estuaries, and tidal creeks, where they feed on shrimp, small fish, and crustaceans. Anglers often target spotted seatrout using techniques such as live bait fishing with shrimp or mullet, casting artificial lures such as soft plastics or topwater plugs, and fly fishing with streamers or poppers.

Another sought-after species in Charleston is the flounder, known for its unique flat shape and delicate flavor. Flounder inhabit sandy or muddy bottoms near inlets, channels, and structure-rich areas, where they lie in wait for prey to pass by. Anglers target flounder using techniques such as bottom fishing with live bait such as minnows or mullet, drifting with baited rigs, or casting artificial lures such as jigs or swimbaits. Flounder are often found in shallow waters, making them accessible targets for anglers fishing from the shore or a boat.

Charleston's waters also host a variety of other species including redfish, black drum, sheepshead, and Spanish mackerel, among others. Whether fishing from a boat, kayak, or the shore, anglers can enjoy pursuing these diverse species using a range of techniques tailored to their habits and habitats. With its rich marine ecosystem and a mix of inshore and nearshore environments, Charleston remains a premier destination for anglers seeking thrilling and diverse fishing experiences along the South Carolina coast.

Cpt Daniel is a great guide. He put us on fish at every location, meaning he worked hard to get fish in the box. We ended the morning with a nice catch of reds and specs, exactly what we were targeting. A veteran, we also got to chatting about our years of service and experiences. It was a great morning, indeed!

Trip: Inshore Fishing On Our New Boat!

  • ★★★★★
This was the highlight of our trip to Charleston! Family of four with a 16 year old daughter and 13 year old son who both love to fish. We booked a 3 hour morning excursion. Carlo communicated with me thru the days leading up to make sure we knew what to bring, where to park, restroom situation, etc. He was all ready for us and we had the BEST trip! He has a great boat, awesome gear, was ready with bait for us, taught us how to cast (and did it for us if we needed a precision cast!), and is an all-around great guy to fish with! He has such great stories, which made the morning so fun and interesting. We all caught several different types of fish, we all caught one stingray (so cool!) and even a blue crab trying to rip off shrimp bait! The experience was worth every penny and my only regret was not booking Carlo for a longer fishing trip. Really, if you think you want to take a fishing charter, book Carlo and you will NOT be disappointed! 12/10 stars Thanks again, Carlo!!
