About Your Trip

If chasing one of the ocean’s most powerful game fish is on your bucket list, Captain John’s Giant Bluefin Tuna trips out of Gloucester deliver a true big-game fishing experience. These legendary waters are known for producing massive Bluefin, and each trip offers the chance to battle one of the most impressive fish in the Atlantic.

Bluefin tuna range widely in size—from school fish in the 30–250 pound range to true giants that can exceed
1,000 pounds. Hooking into one is a test of strength, patience, and teamwork as these fish make powerful runs and long, stubborn fights. With decades of experience fishing the waters off Gloucester, Captain John knows how to locate productive areas and guide anglers through the process of battling these incredible fish.

Depending on conditions and where the fish are feeding, you may fish areas like Stellwagen Bank or Jeffreys Ledge while using proven techniques such as trolling, stand-up gear, and kite fishing. Watching a Bluefin explode on a bait near the surface is an unforgettable moment, and once hooked up, the fight becomes a true test between angler and fish.

Trips range from 7-hour outings focused on nearby productive grounds to longer 9- and 12-hour trips that allow more time to search for fish and stay on the bite. For anglers looking for the ultimate challenge, the Super Stand-Up trips use specialized 50-pound stand-up rods and harness systems that create a direct, hands-on battle with these powerful fish.

You’ll fish aboard a federally registered offshore vessel equipped for serious tuna fishing and capable of accommodating up to six anglers. Captain John and his crew provide the gear, experience, and strategy needed for these demanding trips while guiding anglers of all experience levels through the process.

Just bring food, drinks, sunglasses, sunscreen, and weather-appropriate clothing for the day offshore. Whether you’re an experienced angler or chasing your first tuna, Captain John’s Gloucester Bluefin trips offer an unforgettable opportunity to battle one of the most iconic fish in the ocean.

Captain John has spent more than 45 years fishing the waters off Gloucester, Massachusetts, both recreationally and commercially. With over four decades holding a U.S. Coast Guard Master’s License, he brings a lifetime of experience, seamanship, and local knowledge to every trip.

Giant bluefin tuna is his true specialty. Captain John caught his first bluefin out of a 16-foot boat using a handline rigged with rope and nail kegs, battling the fish for three hours. That early experience sparked a
lifelong pursuit of these powerful giants and helped shape the skills he brings to the water today.

From chasing giant bluefin tuna and battling sharks offshore to targeting cod, haddock, striped bass, and bluefish along the coast, Captain John offers trips for anglers of all skill levels. Whether you are a seasoned fisherman or stepping aboard for the first time, his focus is always on safety, effort, and creating a memorable day on the water.
