About Your Trip

If you’re looking to fill the cooler with some of New England’s best table fare, Captain John’s Haddock and Cod trips out of Gloucester deliver a classic Northeast bottom fishing experience. These trips focus on productive wrecks, ledges, and offshore structure where Haddock and Cod are known to stack up, offering steady action and the chance at some quality fish.

Using proven bottom fishing techniques, you’ll drop bait or jigs to the seafloor to target
Haddock and Cod in their natural habitat. Haddock in the Gloucester area commonly range from 2–7 pounds, while Cod often run from 6–25 pounds, though larger fish are always possible. Both species are strong fighters and prized for their excellent flavor, making them a favorite among anglers and seafood lovers alike.

Trips range from a quick 5-hour outing to extended offshore adventures. The 5-hour Haddock & Cod Expedition is perfect for anglers looking for a focused trip close to Gloucester, while the 9-hour and 12-hour options allow you to venture farther offshore to productive areas like Stellwagen Bank, along with deeper wrecks and ridges that hold quality fish. On the longer trips, Captain John may also keep a tuna rod ready—because in these waters, you never know when a bonus pelagic might swim by.

You’ll fish aboard a federally registered vessel equipped for serious offshore fishing and capable of comfortably accommodating up to six anglers. All bait, tackle, fuel, ice, and Massachusetts fishing licenses are included, so you can simply show up ready to fish. Once back at the dock, the crew will gladly clean your catch so you can enjoy Gloucester’s famous haddock and cod at peak freshness.

Whether you’re a seasoned angler or trying bottom fishing for the first time, Captain John’s trips provide a fun, productive day on the water and a true taste of Gloucester’s legendary fishing grounds. Just bring your hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, food, and drinks—and get ready to drop lines.

Captain John has spent more than 45 years fishing the waters off Gloucester, Massachusetts, both recreationally and commercially. With over four decades holding a U.S. Coast Guard Master’s License, he brings a lifetime of experience, seamanship, and local knowledge to every trip.

Giant bluefin tuna is his true specialty. Captain John caught his first bluefin out of a 16-foot boat using a handline rigged with rope and nail kegs, battling the fish for three hours. That early experience sparked a
lifelong pursuit of these powerful giants and helped shape the skills he brings to the water today.

From chasing giant bluefin tuna and battling sharks offshore to targeting cod, haddock, striped bass, and bluefish along the coast, Captain John offers trips for anglers of all skill levels. Whether you are a seasoned fisherman or stepping aboard for the first time, his focus is always on safety, effort, and creating a memorable day on the water.
