About Your Trip

Fly fishing for Lahontan Cutthroat Trout is an experience unlike any other. These fish are the largest of the cutthroat species, often referred to as “the last survivors of an ancient race of super trout.” With a Washington state record of 18 pounds and even larger fish rumored in the past, every cast has the potential to connect with a true giant. Fishing in clear, shallow water with streamers makes for an exhilarating visual experience as these aggressive predators chase down your fly.

We’ll be fishing from a 14-foot custom-built cataraft designed specifically for fly fishing. Its stability and shallow draft allow us to navigate prime trout water with ease while giving you the perfect platform to present your flies. Whether you're an experienced fly angler or new to targeting big trout with streamers, I’ll guide you through the best techniques to entice these legendary fish.

A couple of days before your trip, I’ll reach out to confirm our boat launch location and meeting time. Early mornings often provide the best fishing conditions, so be prepared for an early start. Be sure to purchase your Washington fishing license before arrival.

For food and drinks, please bring lunch, snacks, and any specialty beverages unless we’ve made other arrangements. I’ll have plenty of water on board to keep everyone hydrated. A good breakfast is key, so eat beforehand or bring something to enjoy on the boat.

Weather in this region can be unpredictable, so dressing in layers is essential. Always bring a rain jacket, even if the forecast looks clear, and avoid wearing cotton unless it’s a hot summer day. Sunscreen is a must on sunny days. Space is limited on the raft, so pack strategically—just the essentials. Please note that cleats and metal studs are not allowed on any of our boats—felt or rubber soles only.

This trip is an incredible opportunity to chase after one of North America’s most unique and historic trout species. Watching a Lahontan Cutthroat explode on your streamer in shallow, crystal-clear water is something you won’t forget. Get ready for an unforgettable day on the water!

Independent Guide
Chad is a passionate fly fishing guide who brings a lifetime of experience and a deep love for the outdoors to every trip he leads. Based in beautiful Washington State, he offers scenic float trips through the North Cascades targeting native Westslope Cutthroat and Rainbow Trout, as well as action-packed fly fishing adventures for Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass, and Rainbows across the Columbia Basin.

Born and raised in the Blue Ridge Mountains of upstate South Carolina, Chad cut his teeth
chasing Largemouth Bass in hidden backwater ponds and drifting dry flies to Rainbow and Brook Trout in small mountain streams. His journey since then has taken him coast to coast—from New York to California—fishing for everything from Brown Trout and Smallmouth Bass to Snook and even Leopard Sharks. But it wasn’t until settling in Washington in 2018 that Chad truly found his stride.

While working as a field biologist for the USDA, Chad spent five days a week fishing the Columbia River, from Priest Rapids Dam all the way to Rocky Reach. The goal was conservation—removing predatory species to protect vital salmon and steelhead runs—but the byproduct was invaluable: an intimate, boots-on-the-ground understanding of Washington’s most iconic fishery.

Encouraged by his wife to follow his true passion, Chad made the leap to guiding full time—and hasn’t looked back. Whether you're a seasoned fly angler or brand new to the sport, Chad’s trips are designed to meet you where you are. With his easygoing nature, wealth of knowledge, and love for teaching, Chad is all about creating relaxed, rewarding days on the water that you'll remember long after the last cast.
