About Your Trip

Get ready for a bucket-list fishing adventure on one of the most iconic salmon runs in the Pacific Northwest! Join Captain Mike for an unforgettable day chasing Chinook and Coho Salmon in the legendary Buoy 10 fishery, where the mighty Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean. Whether you're rounding up the crew for a team outing, planning a family day on the water, or checking a big one off your personal fishing list, this trip offers incredible action, scenic beauty, and expert guidance from start to finish.

The Salmon Run That Made Buoy 10 Famous

Every year, hundreds of thousands of Chinook and Coho salmon push upriver from the saltwater of the Pacific, staging up at the mouth of the Columbia to feed aggressively before their journey inland. This feeding frenzy creates one of the most productive—and exciting—salmon fisheries in the world. These fish are fat, feisty, and strong, making for explosive fights and unforgettable memories.

You’ll be targeting these prized salmon right in the heart of the action, at the famed channel marker Buoy 10, just offshore from Astoria, Oregon. This area is steeped in maritime history—known as “The Graveyard of the Pacific” for its once-treacherous conditions—but today, with modern navigation systems and expert captains like Mike at the helm, it’s a safe and thrilling place to fish.

Top-Tier Tactics & Gear for Maximum Hookups

Captain Mike runs a fully outfitted 22’ River Wild aluminum guide boat that comfortably seats up to 6 anglers. This vessel is built for the river and designed for performance, giving you a smooth, stable ride even when the tides get tricky.

Your main tactic for the day will be trolling fresh-cut herring or anchovies behind flashers—an incredibly effective method in these waters. Mike provides long rods with soft to medium tips and strong backbones, paired with line counter reels so you can dial in the exact depth where the salmon are holding. When the bite turns on, it’s not uncommon to have multiple rods go down at once!

Family-Friendly, First-Timer Approved

This trip isn’t just for seasoned anglers. Kids as young as four or five can enjoy the thrill of catching their first salmon, and Mike is great with beginners, patiently guiding everyone through the basics. Whether you're a die-hard angler or just looking for a fun way to spend the day with loved ones, Buoy 10 delivers a high-energy, high-reward experience for all skill levels.

What to Bring & What’s Provided

Captain Mike will meet you at the East Mooring Basin boat launch in Astoria around 6:00 AM to kick off your day. He’ll provide all the rods, reels, tackle, and bait you’ll need, along with safety gear and up-to-date navigation equipment to ensure a smooth ride. All you need to bring is your Oregon fishing license and tags, snacks, drinks, and lunch, and weather-appropriate clothing (layers recommended!).

Make This Year’s Fishing Trip One to Remember

There’s nothing quite like fishing the mouth of the Columbia River during peak salmon season. Between the dramatic coastal scenery, adrenaline-pumping hookups, and expert guidance from Captain Mike, this Buoy 10 trip is the kind of adventure you’ll talk about for years to come. Book your spot now and get ready to chase salmon in one of the most legendary fisheries in North America!
