Early casting for a mix of white bass and keeper striper has been fun for about 90 minutes. Then we troll for BIG striper, and they are out and hungry in the cooler lake water.

The fall top water bite has come a little early this year. The stripers are running the shad up from the deep river channel onto the shallow flats, and the birds are advertising the feeding frenzy. I am catching live shad every morning to use as bait, but my customers are catching limits casting white slabs before we have a chance to crack the lid on the bait tank. We are using slabs for a fast sink rate to get down to the larger fish that are 10 feet under the surface feeders. Its an exciting time to be on...

Summer Striper/White Bass Bonanza.
Last years flood caused a good number of our striper to be released into the Red River through the spillway. That means the White Bass 1. Have tons more bait to eat and 2. There are far fewer big striper eating small White Bass.
What that means. The morning feed is ferocious. We have 2-3lbs white bass mixed in with keeper sized striper and whites, and are catching them 2 at a time. Boxes of 30-50 fish for groups of 2, and even 75+ fish for a group of 4. After the morning feed slows we...

After the morning feed slows we go deeper and troll for bigger striped bass, and are in the shade taking pics and cleaning fish by 10am, before it gets hot. This pattern should last into early September, when the winds shift.

The summer pattern is in full swing. Easy limits every day and this should carry on through August.

Sometimes, as a fisherman, you have to assess what it is you are doing. One day this bait works great, the next day it wont catch a thing. We have to change and adapt, to present what the fish will eat. But as a fishing guide, we have to be able adapt on the fly, and adapt again, if need be, and also eventually be right. The whole of a lake goes through changes, and things like flooding and draughts effect most reservoirs greatly.

I am a trophy fisherman. And since trophy fish dont come easy, it means I have to not give in to the temptation to just go with the flow. 4lbs, 6lbs, even 8lbs striper are NOT trophy class fish. They are fun and thrilling to catch but in the end, they are going into a freezer bag, not on the wall.
I only get two kinds of clients. The anglers who want to put one on the wall or take pictures with a beast and release it, they generally dont care that much about a bag of fillets, or folks who just want to catch fish, and have fun, and take a couple bags of fillets home.
These two types of trips require totally different approaches... Or do they?
Until recently I disregarded anything but the trophy end of it. That is my nature. The other guides on the lake know I dont flock to the boats, and drop on the shooling fish, even when they are good sized fish.
No offense to those guides, but when I see 3 or 5 or 12 boats in an area, splashers and thumpers going, I see a "school" of guides. There is no trophy striper near them. Maybe a 9 pounder or two, who still feed with the schools, but that 15+ pounder does

The shad have finished spawning, so the stripers have moved off shore into 35 - 40 feet of water. Birds are working over mixed schools.of Stripers and White Bass for the first hour after sunrise, but then they go back to deep water for the rest of the day. We are catching limits daily of medium size fish from 14" - 18"; with a fish or two over 20".

The topwater bite is on fire, but you have to get here by 6am, and have 4 or less in your group.

Fishing has been tough all over the lake in the mornings, but afternoons have been fantastic. The birds have been working down by the dam between 2pm- 5:30pm, there are small stripers feeding at the surface, but the big stripers are underneath them. The larger stripers are taking advantage of the wounded and dead shad that the small stripers are leaving behind.

I've been guided on Texoma every year since 2018 and have never used the same guide, until now. I'll be fishing with Bubba every year from now on. On a trip where we got soaked in rain, and the bite started slow, Bubba worked his tail off to put us on fish and fill our 4 man limit. Bubba was personable, easy going, and determined to make sure we had a good time. He even took special care and showed great patience with my 7 year old nephew. I'll never need to look for another experience again. Worth every penny!
